Full Description
The excavation of several trenches in association with the laying of utilities was undertaken within the inner bailey of Dover Castle in 1967-1968. the excavations of these trenches uncovered a number of features of interest. They demonstrated that the structural division between the two buildings now in use as the regimental museum is medieval at the junction with the curtain. Alongside this walls stand in neatly squared footings which were set into (though not part of) the chalk layer which is contemporary with the completion of the Keep and Curtain. These footings were clearly intended to carry narrower walls than the present solid rubble walls. Within the walls a red clay floor is present, bonded closely with the chalk footings. Contemporary layers produced pottery of a 13th century date and it is likely that these walls relate to the earliest stage or residential ranges in this location of the inner baily dating to the reign of King John. In plan the footings located within these trenches indicate that the building in this location is early in date appears to have projected much further to the south than the present 1740s building in this location.
