Full Description
The archaeological evalution of the land at 64a Union Street consisted of the cutting of two 1mx1m test pits. A deposit of primary demolition rubble associated with St Gregory's Priory was recovered along with wall and floor remains associated with a 19th century building.
The report does provide the archaeological background of the area making direct reference to St Gregory's Priory as the development site lies within the grounds of such. The report states that the development site lies within the ground associated with the infirmary cloister and its surrounding building ranges. The priory however was dissolved in 1537 and in evaluation pit one the remains of rubble deposits were recovered, thought to be in association to the demolition of the priory. Evaluation pit one also saw some deposits of Tudor brick and a fragment of a Victorian chine plate.
Evaluation pit two saw the recovery of some 19th century brick walls and a brick floor along with remnants of mortar and rubble.
The report concludes that evaluation pit one saw the earliest remains recovered from St Gregory's Priory and that the walls and floor remains in pit two are thought to be associated with one of the buildings erected in the area during the 19th century after the military barracks had been sold off to provide for housing development. The report also states that development of the area extending deeper than 0.19m below the present ground surface is likely to impact upon modern (19th century) building remains and that any development below 0.81m is likely to impact upon the primary demolition material from St Gregory's Priory, referencing the 1988-1991 excavations stating the potential for standing structural remains to lie just below the demolition material.
