Full Description
Likely Mid C20th building which forms the north west corner of Market Square, at the southern end of Cannon Street. Commercial use throughout – upper floors used at office space. Whole façade is curved which emphasises its placement at the corner between two areas. It is on a small scale than the buildings on either side of it which are both tall and narrow. Ground floor has a modern glazed commercial use, with access to the upper floors at the far south eastern end, immediately abutting the southern party wall. Some original shop front details survive, including the pilasters and consoles over each of the party walls. There is some untidy wiring above the ground floor but otherwise it is very well kept. The first and second floors are in a red brick and is split into five equally spaced bays, with a single window per bay on each floor, giving the façade a symmetrical appearance. There are decorative, art deco style stone architrave window surrounds around all the windows. The stone detailing continues in the area above and beneath the windows, between the floors, linking the first-floor windows with the second within each of the bays. The central window on the first floor has decorative scrolled detail at the base of the surround and a triangular pediment above. There is a slight parapet in brick above the second floor with concrete coping.
The commercial ground floor door is at the southern end of the façade and is slightly recessed from the street. It is modern and glazed with a large single pane. There is a narrow rectangular window above the transom over the door. On the northern side of the door are five large panes, separated by timber (?) glazing bars and over very slight stall risers. The southern most is within the angle towards the recessed door and is slightly smaller that the rest which are all of an equal size. The first and second floor windows are all modern PVC windows. There is large timber door giving access to the upper floors at the far southern end of the façade. It is a painted (grey) timber double door, with three panels per door, the upper most is glazed. There is a large commercial sign above all of the windows and doors running across the whole of the façade. (1)
