Full Description

This building was constructed soon after Cannon Street had been widened in 1893. The whole building is at a slight angle to No 14-15 next door to the south but is flush with no 17 on the northern side. Commercial ground floor retains many, possibly original, shop front details including the timber pilasters over the party walls and between the windows, the console at the top of the pilasters, the stall risers and the timber window frames, all of which are painted red and white. There are two doors, one at either side of the façade, one give access to the commercial ground floor while the other to the residential floor above, both of which are recessed from the street within a small porch. The first and second floors are exposed red brick. At the first-floor level there is a single, centrally placed canted oriel bay window. There are flag pole brackets on either side of this window at approx. half first floor height. The second-floor window is also centrally placed and consisted of two, two pane sashes separated by a timber mullion. There are a number of decorative architectural details on this window, including a decorative stone lintel, a stone sill with 4 stone brackets beneath and a elaborate, Corinthian-order style pilaster, again in stone, over the mullion between the sashes. Above the second floor there is a stone cornice with dentil detailing along its bottom, this created a very slight parapet at the roof level. A gutter down pipe runs from a slight gap just beneath the cornice down to the pavement level over the northern party wall. There is a single large dormer, aligning with the windows below, at the roof level. Overall the building is in good condition and retains a number of high-quality original features.

The ground floor retains many of its original shop front details including the timber window frames. The two doors are set back from the street, the southern door, giving access to the ground floor is mostly glazed, and possibly original. The northern door is a later replacement and is further back from the street. There is a square window over a transom above both of these doors. The window immediately to the north of the ground floor access is set at an angle to accommodate for the recessed door. The other window is flush with the street. Both are split into two large panes, a tall lower pane and a shorter upper, with the transom aligning with the top of the door level. All of the frames are painted and some of the paintwork is a bit chipped. At the first-floor level there is a single centrally placed canted oriel bay window, with original timber framed sashes. The central sash is four panes, separated by glazing bars, while the outer sashes are two panes each. There are four decorative timber pilasters over the mullions between that sashes and a moulded cornice above with dentil detail. The second-floor window consists of two, two pane sashes with a timber mullion between, there are a number of decorative stone details on this window surround (described above). There is a large, flat roofed dormer at the roof level, this appears to consist of two, two pane sashes again separated by a timber mullion. This dormer aligns with the window below and is centrally placed within the roof. All the glass and timber frames are in a good condition and are likely original.

Slate mansard roof, with single large dormer window located behind a very slight parapet. There is a brick chimney stack at the ridge over the southern party wall. (1)
