Full Description
C19th building, early, in brick. Modern heavily inserted ground floor for commercial use as a jewellers. The ground floor is mostly glazed, with a central door set within a recessed porch area. The area beneath the windows and over the party walls is in a polished stone, possibly granite. The first floor is in a painted brick with two openings of an equal size, and both with gauged flat brick arches above. There is a bracket for a flag pole located centrally between these two windows, with some iron staining on the brickwork beneath it. There is a slight parapet over the first floor with metal flashing over the coping. A recessed area within the brickwork over the northern party wall contains a gutter down pipe, which is possibly original. There is a great deal of untidy wiring located immediately above the ground floor, most of which is associated with the modern security systems but some of it looks to be redundant. Overall the building appears to be in a good condition.
Ground floor commercial frontage is mostly glazed with a central door set within a porch area. The windows on either side of the door continue around the corners created by the recessed area into the porch. There are two windows on the first floor both of an equal size and shape. The frames within both are timber and casement, painted black, and possibly original. They are each split into 12 small panes by timber glazing bars. The windows are protected on the inside by a set or bars, suggesting that the first floor is used for storage.
Gable roof with the gable ends located over the party walls, ceramic tiles. There is a slight bow towards the centre of the roof, otherwise it appears to be I good condition.
On a much smaller scale than many of the other buildings located on Biggin and Cannon Street (opposite). Possibly one of the earlier buildings on the street, can be clearly seen on the first edition OS (1865-75) and is visible on historic photographs dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (1)
