Full Description
Forms one of the central parts of a block of four houses, all are part of a single build. The area to the front of the property is in concrete and is currently used as off-street parking. There is a paved walkway between the street level and the front door. There is a modern wall in brick and concrete on the eastern side of the = front garden area, separating it from its eastern neighbour.
Circa mid C19 forms part of a small block of four dwellings (5-8 Saxon Street). The ground floor doorway is located on the eastern side of the façade, with a single window on the western side. This door is set within a slight recess and is accessed via a set of three steps. There is a possibly original C19th iron balustrade on either side of these steps and an area railing in front of the basement, again possibly original. The whole of the ground floor is stuccoed and painted white. There is a deep entablature over the ground floor which breaks forward over the doorway with three stuccoed pilasters with capitals beneath; one located over the western party wall and one on either side of the door. There are a few small cracks in the stucco on this entablature. The stucco at the basement level is slightly advanced and flush with the pilasters. The upper floors of the main façade are in an exposed stock brick and there are two windows; one per floor, both of which align with the ground floor window with a further window also aligning with the ground floor window at the basement level (this was not clearly seen). A deep stuccoed band and stucco scrolled brackets are located immediately beneath the overhanging eaves, there is some weathering to the plaster detailing on these decorative brackets. There are multiple large aerials attached untidily to the façade at the first floor level with the associated wiring crossing the first and ground floors, and there is a large modern metal bracket attached to the stucco at the ground floor level. The building is in a good condition and appears to be structurally sound.
All windows appear to be the original timber framed sashes and are all divided into 12 rectangular panes by timber glazing bars (three wide by four high). The door is located on the eastern side of the façade. It is modern and in a timber painted white, the upper half is glazed and divided into 13 small panes by timber glazing bars. There is a small rectangular window located above the transom over the door, also with a timber frame. The basement window was not clearly seen but aligns with the ground floor window and also appears to be timber framed and divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. All the window frames are painted white and all windows are in a good condition.
The roof is hipped with deeply overhanging eaves on stuccoed scrolled brackets. The roof structure is shared with both its eastern and western neighbour (5 and 7) The roof slates have been replaced by concrete tiles and there is a fair amount on lichen growth on them. There is a tall rendered axial stack over ridge on the western side of the building Shared with No 7. Both the roof structure and the stack appear to be in a good condition. (1)
