Full Description

Forms one of the central parts of a block of four houses, all are part of a single build. The area to the front of the property is in concrete and is currently used as off-street parking. There are modern timber fences separating this front garden area from the neighbours’ on either side.

Circa mid C19 forms part of a small block of four dwellings (5-8 Saxon Street). The ground floor doorway is located on the western side of the façade, set within a slight recess, with a single window on the eastern side. This door is accessed via a set of concrete steps and there is a possibly original C19th balustrade on either side of these steps. The whole of the ground floor is stuccoed and painted cream. There is a deep entablature over the ground floor which breaks forward over the doorway with three stuccoed pilasters with capitals beneath; one located over the eastern party wall and one on either side of the door. The stucco at the basement level is slightly advanced and flush with the pilasters. There are a few cracks within the stucco at the ground floor level and within the entablature. The upper floors of the main façade are in an exposed stock brick and there are two windows; one per floor and both aligning with the ground floor windows, the first floor window has a flat gauged brick arch over and both have protruding stone sills painted white. A further window is located at the basement level this also aligns with the ground floor window though was not clearly seen. A deep stuccoed band and stucco scrolled brackets are located immediately beneath the overhanging eaves, again there are a few cracks within this stucco band and some of the detail on the scrolled brackets is damaged. There are modern features attached to the façade, including a modern aerial and its associated wiring attached at the first floor level, and ceramic plant pots attached to the ground floor. Aside from the afore mentioned cracks, the building appears to be in a good condition and structurally sound.

All windows appear to be the original timber framed sashes and are all divided into 12 rectangular panes by timber glazing bars (three wide by four high). The door is located on the western side of the façade, it is modern and painted blue with a small rectangular glazed pane located within its upper half. There is a small rectangular window located above the transom over the door, also with a timber frame. The basement window was not clearly seen but aligns with the ground floor window. All of the window frames are painted white, the paintwork on the ground floor window is chipped, otherwise all windows are in a good condition.

The roof is hipped and in welsh slate with deeply overhanging eaves on stuccoed scrolled brackets. The roof structure is shared with both its eastern and western neighbour (6 and 8). There is a tall rendered axial stack over ridge on the western side of the building shared with No 6. Both the roof structure and the stack appear to be in a good condition. (1)
