Full Description
Forms one of the central parts of a block of four houses, all are part of a single build. The area to the front of the property is in concrete and is currently used as off-street parking. There is an iron fence located between the front gardens of this property and No. 10 on its eastern side. This is in the same style as the area railings situated in front of the basement level.
Circa mid C19 forms part of a small block of four dwellings (9-12 Saxon Street). The ground floor doorway is located on the western side of the façade, set within a slight recess, with a single window on the eastern side. This door is accessed via a set of concrete steps and there is a possibly original C19th balustrade on either side of these steps and iron area railings around the basement level which are also possibly original. The whole of the ground floor is stuccoed and painted white. There is a deep entablature over the ground floor which breaks forward over the doorway with three stuccoed pilasters with capitals beneath; one located over the eastern party wall and one on either side of the door. The stucco at the basement level is slightly advanced and flush with the pilasters. The upper floors are in an exposed stock brick and there are two windows; one per floor and both aligning with the ground floor window, the first floor window has a flat gauged brick arch over and both have protruding stone sills painted white. There are two iron balconettes, one over the ground floor window and another over the first floor window. It is unclear as to whether these are original but, if they are not, they are in an in-keeping style. A further window is located at the basement level this also aligns with the ground floor window though is slightly wider being four panes wide rather than three. A deep stuccoed band and stucco scrolled brackets are located immediately beneath the overhanging eaves. There are modern features attached to the façade, including a modern aerial and its associated wiring which is draped untidily in a number of locations. The building appears to be in a good condition and structurally sound.
All windows appear to be the original timber framed sashes and are divided into 12 rectangular panes by timber glazing bars (three wide by four high). The door is located on the western side of the façade, it is modern and painted brown with a small semi-circular glazed area at its top, divided into four triangular panes by timber glazing bars. There is a small rectangular window located above the transom over the door, also with a timber frame. The basement window aligns with the ground floor window but is slightly wider, four panes wide by three high. All of the window frames are painted white and all windows are in a good condition.
The roof is hipped with deeply overhanging eaves on stuccoed scrolled brackets. The roof structure is shared with both its eastern and western neighbour (12 and 10). There is a tall rendered axial stack over ridge on the western side of the building shared with No 10. The slates have been replaced with concrete tiles and there is a fair amount of lichen growth on these. Both the roof structure and the stack appear to be in a good condition. (1)
