Full Description
Forms one of the central parts of a block of four houses, all are part of a single build. The area to the front of the property is in concrete and is currently used as off-street parking. A mature hedge separates this front garden from No 9’s on its eastern side while a iron fence separates it from No 11’s.
Circa mid C19 forms part of a small block of four dwellings (9-12 Saxon Street). The ground floor doorway is located on the eastern side of the façade, with a single window on the western side. This door is set within a slight recess and is accessed via a set of three concrete steps. There is a possibly original C19th iron balustrade on either side of these steps and an area railing in front of the basement, again possibly original. A further door is located beneath the steps up to the front door, giving separate access to the basement level. The steps down to the basement level are located on the western side of the façade, through a gap in the area railings. The whole of the ground floor is stuccoed and painted cream. There is a deep entablature over the ground floor which breaks forward over the doorway with three stuccoed pilasters with capitals beneath; one located over the western party wall and one on either side of the door. The stucco at the basement level is slightly advanced and flush with the pilasters. The upper floors of the main façade are in an exposed stock brick and there are two windows; one per floor, both of which align with the ground floor window with a further window also aligning with the ground floor window at the basement level. A deep stuccoed band and stucco scrolled brackets are located immediately beneath the overhanging eaves. Several modern features are attached to the façade including multiple large aerials and a satellite dish with associated wiring which is draped untidily across the façade, as well as to large metallic brackets at the ground floor level for hanging baskets. The building is in a good condition and appears to be structurally sound.
All windows appear to be the original timber framed sashes and are all divided into 12 rectangular panes by timber glazing bars (three wide by four high). The door is located on the eastern side of the façade. It is modern and in a timber painted black with four rectangular panels, the upper two of which are glazed in an opaque glass. There is a small rectangular window located above the transom over the door, also with a timber frame. The basement window aligns with the ground floor window but is slightly wider being four panes wide by three high. The door into the basement level is also modern, though it was not clearly seen it is in timber painted white and at least the upper portion is glazed with rectangular panes separated by timber glazing bars. All of the window frames are painted white and all windows are in a good condition.
The roof is hipped and in welsh slate with deeply overhanging eaves on stuccoed scrolled brackets. The roof structure is shared with both its eastern and western neighbour (11 and 9). There is a tall rendered axial stack over ridge on the western side of the building Shared with No 11. Both the roof structure and the stack appear to be in a good condition. (1)
