Full Description

Terrace of 10 houses in 5 pairs. Nos 1 and 2, and 5 to 8 break forward and the right hand end is slightly higher and therefore it is not symmetrical.

Forms part of a terrace of 10 houses, all of a mid C19 date, of a double depth plan, in stock brick with stuccoed ground floor and basements. The whole building projects forward very slightly from its western neighbour (No. 3) but is flush with its eastern (No. 1). The door is on the eastern side of the façade with a single window to the west. The ground floor is raised from the street level and access to the front door is via a set of six concrete steps with and original C19th balustrade on its western side and a low wall to the east dividing the two properties. This wall continues to the front of the small garden area, with a gate pier at its northern end. There is a door located beneath these steps giving separate access to the basement level, this was not clearly seen. There is a single window per floor, these align across all of the floors including the basement level. A stucco string course is located at ground floor cornice level and another is at the base of the first floor, forming a continuous sill for the first floor window which breaks forward beneath the window and has two small brackets beneath. The lower of these two string courses is on small stucco brackets, four in total, one on either side of the window and door and there is also a small projecting cornice over the door. There are some small chips to the render on this cornice and a small amount of vegetation growth located above it. The first and second floor windows have flat gauged brick arches over and the second and ground floor windows have projecting sills. There is a brick parapet over the second floor level with cement coping. A low stuccoed brick wall is located in front of the property, separating it from the street. There is a large modern aerial attached to the brick stack with its associated wiring draped untidily across the façade. The rear elevation is in flint with coursed brick dressings, it is largely unaltered and many of the original sashes with glazing bars survive There is a modern plastic gutter down pipe located over the eastern party wall of the rear elevation and a large satellite dish is located at the first floor level. A basement level extension extends to the south at the western side of the façade, this was not clearly seen but has a shed roof in slate and appears to be modern. Overall the building is in a good condition.

There are four windows located across the façade, all are original 16-pane sashes, (four high by four wide) apart from the basement level window which is not as tall (four wide by three high). The door is located on the eastern side of the façade. It is likely original and in timber painted black with four panels, the upper two of which are glazed in a frosted glass, and there is a decorative original knocker located between them. The basement level door was not clearly seen. There is a rectangular overlight in an opaque glass above the transom over the door. Four windows are located on the rear elevation, all of which are original timber sashes, three are divided into 12 panes by timber glazing bars (three wide by four high), while the fourth is slightly narrower and divided into eight panes (two wide by four high). The basement level windows were not seen on the rear elevation. All visible windows are in a good condition.

The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a brick parapet. It is gabled with the gable ends over each of the party walls. It is in a Welsh slate. There is a axial brick stack located over the eastern party wall. With a large modern aerial attached. (1)
