Full Description
Forms part of a terrace of ten mid C19th buildings, many of which retain their original C19th shop fronts. The shop front of this building covers the whole of the ground floor on the north eastern facade and is heavily inserted for a modern commercial use though retains its fluted pilasters and consoles over the party walls. There are two doors one at either end of the façade, one giving access to the ground floor and another door providing access to the upper floors, both are modern. The upper floors are in a painted (white) brick, there is a fair amount of staining and dirt on this paintwork. There are two windows per floor, aligning across the floors. All of these have flat gauged brick arches above. The second floor windows have small protruding sills while the first floor windows rest on a continuous sill located directly over the protruding cornice over the ground floor, this is painted white and are some cracks in this paintwork and untidy wiring associated with a security system located over it. There is a slight parapet above the second floor windows, this is rendered and there are some large cracks visible in this render and some vegetation growth located above and behind it behind it. A large amount of untidy wiring in located across the façade, some of which looks redundant. The south western (rear) elevation was not clearly seen but is in a brick rubble with coursed brick dressings. Despite some untidiness, the building is in a fair-good condition and structurally sound.
The ground floor openings are heavily inserted for a modern commercial use. There are two doors, one at either end of the façade and both are entirely glazed. There is a large single pane located between these two doors and two rectangular windows above the transoms over the doors. There are four windows on the upper floors of the north eastern elevation, two per floor aligning across the floors. All are original timber framed sashes divided into 12 panes by timber glazing bars (three wide by four high). There is an original dormer window located centrally at the roof level, this is divided into two parts by a timber mullion, each part consists of a timber framed sash divided into six panes by timber glazing bars. All of these timber window frames are painted white, the paintwork on some of them is chipped but otherwise all are in a good condition, with all panes present and in-tact. The windows on the rear elevation were not clearly seen.
The roof is set back slightly from the main façade, behind a rendered parapet. It is mansard and in slate, there is metallic flashing on the angle. There are two, possibly original dormer windows, on the north eastern side and another on the south western. Two brick axial stacks are located over both party walls. The roof structure appears to be in a good condition with no bowing or obvious slipped slates. (1)
