Full Description

Ruined church located on the south western side of High Street. Originally constructed in 1904 in a gothic style it is large and clad with a buff coloured stone. The building is nearly 30m in length and over 15m wide. Originally the main entrance would have been through a door within a small porch with a gothic arch on the north western side of the building. The main entrance was later moved to the north western end of the building and a window inserted within the porch. A very large window with a gothic arch and ornate tracery is located above the porch and door. Most of the windows display the same gothic detail in the tracery and would have likely originally held ornate stained and leaded glass within but this has since been lost. A tall tower is located on its south eastern corner of the church. This has a crenelated parapet and decorative stone finials at its top and jalousie style openings on all four sides in its upper half, presumably for ventilation. Numerous original and sometime decorative features survive in various locations including several areas of carved stone, decorative carved stone door surrounds and original gutter hoppers. Much of the church, including the roof, windows and most of the interior features were destroyed during a large fire in 2007. The building has stood empty and in ruins since then. It is currently in a poor condition and there is much work needed to repair and restore it. The churchyard is overgrown and separated from the street level by a low wall and harris fencing.

Most of the original glass has been lost or is broken though some small areas of stained and leaded glass area retained, mainly within the narrow windows in the tower and some of the smaller windows. Overall the windows are in a poor condition.

The roof structure was completely destroyed in the 2007 fire (1)
