Full Description
Located on the north eastern side of High Street on the corner of a small side street (Queen Victoria Row). The ground floor has a modern commercial use, it is largely glazed with the commercial fascia running across the whole of the ground floor. The south eastern corner of the ground floor is at an angle to the rest of the building, meaning that the fascia overhangs here. The commercial windows and the fascia above continue onto a small part of the south eastern (side elevation). Some, possibly original features survive, including timber pilasters over the party walls and between some of the windows, as well as the timber window and door surrounds. There is a single ground floor door located within a small recessed porch area, just off centre with a small rectangular window above the transom. There are tall windows on either side of the door, as well as within the return towards the door, each with a transom aligning with the top of the door. A further window is located within the angled corner and another next to this on the south eastern side of the building, fronting onto Queen Victoria Row. Several small vents are located below these windows and near the pavement level on the Queen Victoria Row side of the building, possibly indicating the presence of a basement below. The upper floors are rendered and painted cream. There is a single window per floor, each is centrally placed with a moulded architrave surround. A parapet is situated over the second floor with a protruding cornice below. The render is slightly discoloured and cracked in places, this is predominantly evident at the parapet level which particularly weathered and worn. The side elevation is also rendered, there are two further windows, one on each floor and aligning across the floors towards the north eastern end of the building. Overall the building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
All of the ground floor openings have timber frames painted green to match the commercial signage. It is not clear as to whether they are original but if not, they are in an in-keeping style to the age of the building. The first and second floor windows consist of original timber framed sashes divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. All are 12 panes (three wide by four high) with the frames also painted green. All are in a good condition.
The roof structure was not clearly seen from the road as it is located behind a parapet. A large areal is visible over it on the north western side. (1)
