Full Description
Relatively narrow building located on the north eastern side of High Street, it is similar in style and scale to its north western neighbour (No. 26) suggesting that they are contemporary. The ground floor is heavily inserted for a modern commercial use, it is recessed slightly from the street level and clad in timber with four narrow rectangular windows and a central modern door. Some original shop front details may survive behind this timber cladding though this is uncertain. The commercial fascia stretches across the whole of the top of the ground floor above a (possibly original) moulded cornice. The upper floors are in a painted (cream) brick, with a single window on each floor, located centrally within the façade. The brickwork is stained and discoloured in places, particularly at the top of the building. The first-floor window has a decorative plaster cornice above with a triangular pediment supported by two scrolled plaster brackets. This plasterwork detail is slightly weathered. The second-floor window also has a cornice and scrolled brackets, though lacks the pediment. There is a brick parapet over the second floor, some vegetation growth is visible behind this parapet. A number of modern features are attached to the façade, including a large commercial sigh at the first-floor level and an aerial at the roof, the wiring for which is draped untidily at the base of the first floor. Overall though untidy in places the building appears to be structurally sound and in a fairly good condition.
All of the openings at the ground floor are modern with metallic surrounds. These are in a good condition with all panes present and intact. The first floor window is a possibly original timber frames sash with two large panes, the paintwork on this surround is chipped and dirty. The second floor window is a later plastic replacement, all windows, though dirty and with chipped paintwork, are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof structure was not clearly seen from the road as it is located behind a parapet. A large areal is attached to centrally to the roof and chimney pots are visible above the parapet suggesting the presence of a central stack. (1)
