Full Description
Single build with its north western neighbour, located on the south western side of High Street, together they have a symmetrical appearance (excluding the basement levels). The basement level/lower ground floor level had a former commercial use (it is currently un-occupied) and projects further towards the north east (level with the street) than the main part of the building. This part of the building is heavily inserted and modern. It is largely glazed with a door on its southern side and a large window on the north western side. Two original pilasters are located over the party walls with original consoles over, though these are both in a poor condition. The roof of this commercial premises appears to be flat, but it was not clearly seen. The main part of the building is rendered and painted blue. Access to the upper ground floor is via a set of 11 stone steps on the south eastern side of the building, there is a rendered wall on the southern side of these steps. The door to this level is located close to the south eastern party wall and looks to be original with a rectangular overlight above the transom over the door. The far south eastern end of the building, including the area surrounding the door, projects forward very slightly from the rest of the façade. There are two windows per floor on the upper ground floor and first floor levels, aligning across the floors. A string course is located between the ground and first floor levels. There is a slight cornice over the first floor over which is a parapet. There are two dormers at the roof level, both aligning with the windows on the floors below. The paintwork/render is chipped, cracked and discoloured in several locations, particularly at the parapet level. The south eastern (side) elevation is visible over the south eastern neighbour, which is not as tall. This elevation is also rendered though un-painted. two large satellite dishes are attached to this side and a modern gutter down pipe is located near the south eastern corner of the building. The gutter runs behind the parapet at the base of the roof level and runs into this down pipe. Overall, despite some areas of untidiness, particularly at the lower ground floor level, this building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The openings at the commercial lower ground floor are all modern with metallic surrounds. One of the two large panes in the large window at this level is broken. The door for the upper ground floor level is located on the south eastern side of the façade and is in timber painted vibrant green, and appears to original with all of its original fixtures and fittings. The windows at the first and second floor level are later plastic replacements. The dormer windows are also later replacements (possibly metal) the paintwork on these is badly chipped and flaking away. Apart from the cracked window at the lower ground floor level (which is in a poor condition) all of the windows and doors are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof is mansard and in slate with two dormer windows located in the lower angle. It is set back slightly from the main façade and located behind a slight parapet. There is some moss growth in the joins between the slates. There is a brick axial stack located over the south eastern party wall. Overall it is in a good condition with no bowing or slipped slates. The roof of the lower ground floor/basement level is flat and was not clearly seen. (1)
