Full Description
Forms the south eastern end of a C19th terrace on the south western side of High Street. The whole terrace is set back from the street level with a raised pavement/forecourt area to the front of it, accessed via a set of stone steps, with original iron railings separating it from the road. The forecourt in front of this property is quite untidy with a lot of vegetation growth between the paving slabs. The building was covered in scaffolding and in the process of being renovated at the time of inspection so many of the features were not clearly seen. It is in a brown brick with a rendered and painted (white) ground floor. This is currently in a poor condition though appears to be in the process of being re rendered and painted. The front door is located on the north western side of the façade with a rendered cornice on console brackets over it. A canted bay window located centrally at the ground floor level on the south eastern side of the door, the outer two openings within the bay have been blocked leaving only the central open. This bay continues onto the first and second floors and is open on all sides here. Each has a moulded cornice at its top and a protruding sill with decorative plaster brackets supporting it. The third floor window is flat with a gauged flat brick arch over and small protruding stone sill. There are two blocked windows, one at the second floor and one at the third floor level located between this building and its north western neighbour, both have flat gauged brick arches and small stone sills. It is likely that these were inserted to create symmetry across the façade of the terrace and it is unlikely that they were ever open. There is a string course located at the base of the second floor windows, this forms a continuous sill to all of the second floor windows (including the blocked windows) on this terrace. A parapet rises above the third floor with stone coping. A small amount of the south eastern (side) elevation was visible over the south eastern neighbour which is not as tall. This is rendered and there are some large cracks within this render. Overall the building is in a fair condition, with some improvement needed, though work appears to be being carried out on the building suggesting that any problems with it are likely to be fixed imminently.
The door, which is located on the north western side of the façade is modern and in in timber painted Blue. The ground, first and second floor windows are canted bays, one on top of one another, and each divided into three parts by timber mullions. These bays are likely a later C19th insertion. The outer two parts of the ground floor bay have been blocked and rendered over, leaving only the central open. Each part of the three parts of the first and second floor bays and the single ground floor opening consist of a timber framed sash, the central being double the width of the outer two and divided into four panes by timber glazing bars. The third floor window is also a timber sash, the upper part is divided into three small panes and the lower two large panes, all by timber glazing bars. It is unlikely that this sash is original but, as with the bay windows below, it could be a later C19th replacement. Overall the windows are in a good condition.
The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a brick parapet. From the small amount which was visible from the side elevation is could be established that it is in slate and gabled, with the gable ends over the south eastern and north western party walls. A brick axial stack is located over the south eastern party wall. (1)
