Full Description

Forms part of a C19th terrace on the south western side of High Street. This building in a brown brick and is slightly recessed from its north western neighbour but flush with its south eastern. The ground floor is set back and at a higher level from the street and the front door, which is located on the north western side of the façade is accessed via a set of 15 stone steps. A rendered brick wall is located on the north western side of these steps, separating it from the building on the north western side. The basement level is advanced from the rest of the façade and level with the street below. It has been heavily inserted for a modern commercial use (as a funeral parlour) and is continued into the basement level of the building on the south eastern side. The door at the ground floor level is possibly original and there is a semi-circular fanlight located above it with a corresponding brick arch. There are three windows located on the main façade, one per floor. The ground floor window is a large canted bay with moulded cornice over. The first and second floor windows are flat sashes with flat gauged brick arches over and small protruding sills. The sills and brickwork over these windows is painted white, this paintwork is badly chipped and flaking away in places. A parapet rises above the second floor with stone coping, a modern plastic gutter down pipe starts at a small gap in this parapet level and runs down to the basement level over the north western party wall. There is some staining and weathering to the brickwork across the façade. Overall, despite some untidiness, the building is in a fairly good condition and appears to be structurally sound.

The ground floor door is possibly original (?) and in timber painted black with six panels. There is a semi-circular window located above the transom over this door, this has a timber frame and a single pane which is likely a later insertion. The basement level has been heavily inserted for a modern commercial use, it consists of two large timber doors. The ground floor window consists of large canted bay window divided into three sections by timber mullions. Each of the sections consists of a timber framed sash, the central is double the width of the outer two and is divided into four panes. It is unlikely that this is original but is possibly later C19th insertion. The first and second floor windows are original flat timber framed sashes divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. Both are four panes wide and the first floor is four high while the second floor is not as tall; only three high. The timber frames on all the windows are painted white, this paintwork in a poor condition and flaking away from the timber in various locations, this is particularly bad on the bay window. Overall, despite some untidiness with the windows are in a fairly good condition with all panes present and in tact.

The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a brick parapet. It is slate and gabled with the gable ends over the south eastern and north western party walls. There are two axial brick stacks located over each of the party walls. (1)
