Full Description
Forms part of a C19th terrace on the south western side of High Street. This building is in a brown brick with painted brick at the basement level. The ground floor is at a higher level than the street and the front door, which is located on the north western side of the façade is accessed via a set of nine stone steps. There is a low rendered brick wall on either side of these steps with an iron balustrade attached above. Both the steps and these low walls are untidy with a lot of vegetation growth attached. The door has a semi-circular fanlight located above the transom over the door and the corresponding brick arch above is rendered and painted. There are four windows located on the main façade, one per floor and all, apart from the ground floor window, are located centrally within the façade and align across the floors. The ground floor window is a large canted oriel bay window with a moulded cornice and pilasters over the mullions. It is located slightly off centre on the south eastern side of the door and likely a later C19th insertion. All other windows are timber framed sashes with rendered flat gauged brick arches over and small protruding sills. The brickwork over the basement level window has been obscured by the bay window above. A moulded eaves level cornice is located at the top of the second floor with a parapet with stone coping above. Both this cornice and the parapet are badly weathered, with some cracks and is in a fairly poor condition. There is some untidy wiring attached to and draped across the façade at various locations, associated with a security system. A low brick wall with iron area railings above separates the small front garden area from the street level. It is unlikely that these railings are original but are in an in-keeping style for the age of the building. This front garden area is untidy and overgrown. Overall the façade is untidy, and some of remaining original features are in a poor condition, despite this the building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The ground floor door is possibly original and in a painted (black) timber with six panels, the upper four are glazed with opaque glass. There is a semi-circular window located above the transom over this door this is a single pane and likely a later insertion. There are four windows located on the main façade, one per floor and all, apart from the ground floor window, are located centrally within the façade and align across the floors. The ground floor window is a later C19th insertion and consists of a large canted oriel bay window divided into three parts by timber mullions. Each of these three parts consists of a timber framed sash, the central is double the with of the two outer and is divided into four panes by timber glazing bars. All other windows are original flat timber framed sashed divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. The basement and first floor level windows are divided into 16 panes (four high by four wide) while the second floor window is 12 (four wide by three high). These timber frames are all painted white, some of this paint is dirty and chipped, particularly on the ground floor bay window. Despite this all the windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet. It is slate and gabled with the gable ends over the south eastern and north western party walls. There is an axial brick stack located over the south eastern party wall with a large modern aerial attached to it. (1)
