Full Description
Forms part of a C19th terrace on the south western side of High Street. This building is in a brown and has a late C19th shop front at the ground floor level with many surviving C19th features (today the building has a residential use). These include the fluted pilasters over the party walls with decorative scrolled consoles above, the moulded cornice which projects forward from the façade over the ground floor as well as the timber window and door surrounds which are painted black. There are two doors at the ground floor level, one at either end of the façade, each with a square window above the transom over the door. There is a large canted bay window occupying the space between these two windows, the cornice above the ground floor mirrors the projecting angles of this window. There are four windows located on the main façade, two per floor on both the first and second floor levels. The base of the first floor windows rests directly upon the projecting cornice over the ground floor. An original iron railing tops the cornice creating a small balcony at the first floor level. All windows have flat gauged brick arches over and the second floor windows have small protruding sills. Two further flat roofed dormers are located at the roof level, these align with the windows on the floors below. A modern guttering at the eaves level runs into a possibly original gutter down pipe located over the south eastern party wall. Overall the building is in a good condition with a number of original or later C19th features (including the shopfront) surviving.
There are two doors located at the ground floor level, one at either end of the façade, both are of a possible late C19th date and are in timber painted black with six panels. Both have a large rectangular window above the transoms, the upper part of the south eastern window has been blocked. The area between these two doors is occupied with a large canted bay window, divided into four large rectangular panes. Though the surrounds for this window are likely original, it is unlikely that the large panes are. All the ground floor window and door frames are painted black and are in a good condition. There are two windows on both the first and second floor levels, all are original timber framed sashes divided into 12 panes by timber glazing bars. The first-floor windows are slightly taller then the second floor windows, with larger panes. There are two small flat roofed dormers at the roof level, these are also timber frames sashed divided into four panes by timber glazing bars. All of the frames at are painted white and though there are some small chips to the paintwork, all appear to be in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof is gabled with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. It is covered in ceramic tiles all of which appear to be in a good condition. There are two tall axial stacks at the ridges over each of the party walls, the southern is rendered while the northern is in an exposed brick. Two small flat roofed dormers are also located at the roof level. There is metallic flashing at the point where the base of both stacks and the dormers meet the roof level. There is modern plastic guttering at the eaves level. A fair amount of vegetation growth is located within this gutter. Overall the roof is in a good condition with no bowing or obvious slipped or missing tiles. (1)
