Full Description

Forms part of a C19th terrace on the south western side of High Street and is one of a symmetrical pair (103 and 105). This building is in a brown brick with a rendered basement level. The ground floor is at a higher level than the street and the front door, which is located on the south eastern side of the façade, is accessed via a set of nine steps with an original iron balustrade on either side of them. Both this door and that of its south eastern neighbour (No. 103) are set within a slight recess in the brickwork over which is a segmental brick arch. There is a small blocked semi-circular window above the transom over the door and a corresponding brick arch above. A further door is located beneath the steps up to the ground floor door, providing separate access to the basement level. There are four windows located on the main façade aligning across all floors. The ground floor and first floor level windows consist of large canted bay windows, one on top of another, both are later insertions. The basement and second floor levels windows are flat and the second floor window has a flat gauged brick arch over and small protruding sill. There are two blocked windows located centrally between this building and its south eastern neighbour, these also have the brick arches above. These were possibly inserted to create symmetry across the façade and it is unlikely that they were ever open. A moulded eaves level cornice is located at the top of the second floor with a rendered parapet above, both are painted cream. Both the cornice and the parapet are weathered and have some small cracks. A quantity of wiring is draped untidily across the façade, this is likely associated with an aerial located at the roof level. Overall this building appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.

The ground floor door is possibly original and in timber painted blue, the basement level door is modern in timber painted white with four panels, the upper two of which are glazed. There is a blocked semi-circular window above the transom over the ground floor door. There are four windows located on the main façade aligning across all floors. The ground and first floor level windows consist of large canted bay windows, one on top of another. Each is divided into three parts by timber mullions. Each part consists of a timber framed sash, the central part of each of the bays is approximately four times the width of the two outer and are divided into 16 small panes by timber glazing bars (four high by four wide) the outer sections are four panes (one wide by four high). These bays are a later insertion. The basement level window is also later and of a likely C20th date. The second floor window is the only (possibly) original window, it is a timber framed sash divided into 16 panes small rectangular (four wide by four high) by timber glazing bars. All of the timber frames are painted white, there are some small chips to the paintwork but overall the windows are all in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet. A small part of the roof is visible over the north western neighbouring building (which is not as tall) here it can be seen that it is a double apex gable in slate with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. There are two brick stacks over the north western party wall, over the ridge of each of the apexes. (1)
