Full Description
Small late C19th building located on the south western side of High Street, it is on a much smaller scale to the terraces located on its south eastern side. The ground floor has a commercial use and is almost entirely glazed. There is a single door located on the south eastern side, abutting the south eastern party wall, with a rectangular window above the transom. The rest of the ground floor is occupied with a large canted bay window. The area below this is in a painted brick. A modern commercial fascia stretches over the whole of the ground floor level. The first floor is also in painted brick and there is a single centrally placed window with a flat gauged brick arch over. A small parapet with concrete coping rises above this first floor level. A gutter down pipe runs through a gap in the brickwork at the base of this parapet, down to the pavement level near the north western party wall. A quantity of wiring crosses the façade near the base of the first floor, this is grouped together and painted to match the brickwork and is likely associated with a aerial located at the roof level. Overall the building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The openings at the ground floor level are for a modern commercial use. There is a single door which is in timber painted black and there is a single, very large glazed panel. There are two windows located above this door, one small rectangular pane located immediately over the transom above the door and a further larger window above this. The rest of the ground floor is taken up with a large canted bay window. A transom is located at approximately three quarters of the height of the window, there is a single large central pane, and two narrower panes below this transom while above it is divided into five equally sized rectangular panes. All frames are in timber, those surrounding the door and the windows above the door are painted cream, while those on the bay window are in a treated timber. The single first floor window is a modern plastic insertion. There are also two small sky lights at the roof level, these are also modern and plastic. Overall all of the openings are in a good condition.
The roof is gabled with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. It is covered with concrete tiles and there is metallic flashing where the roof meets the party walls of the neighbouring buildings which are taller. There are two modern skylights. There is some bowing of the ridge, suggesting there may be some problems with the roof structure, though this is not clear. Otherwise the roof appears to be in a good condition with not obvious slipped tiles.(10
