Full Description

Listed as a group 295-300 located on the north western side of London Road on a raised pavement level.

Forms part of a terrace of C19th buildings located on the south western side of London Road on a raised pavement which is separated from the busy London Road below by a possibly original iron railing. This building is slightly advanced from its north western neighbour but flush with its south eastern, it is in an exposed brown brick with a rendered and painted (cream) basement level and painted brick ground floor. The door is located on the north western side of the façade, immediately abutting the north western party wall; it is raised from the street level and accessed via a set of eight paved steps. A painted brick wall is located on the north western side of these steps separating the front garden area of this building from the front garden area of the building to the north west. A possibly original iron balustrade is located on the southern side of the steps. The door is round headed and set within a slight recess in the brickwork and there is a semi-circular window within this arch located above the transom over the door. A further door is located beneath the steps up to the ground floor level, providing separate access to the basement. There is a single window on the basement, ground, first and second floor levels. The basement and ground floor windows consist of three light canted bays with rendered mullions, located one on top of another. The first and second floor windows are both flat with flat gauged brick arches above and small protruding sills. These both align with the central parts of the bays below. There is a parapet with a stone coping located over the second floor. Some wiring crosses the façade at several locations, this is associated with a large aerial attached to the brickwork at the first floor level and a security system located over the ground floor door. A low painted brick wall is located between the front garden area and the street level, with tall brick gate piers at its north western end. Original ceramic tiles are located in front of the steps within this front garden. Overall the building appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.

The ground floor door, which is located on the north western side of the façade, is possibly original and in timber painted red with six moulded panels and a decorative knocker. It is round headed with a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. This window is likely a later insertion and consists of a single pane with a timber frame. The basement level door was not clearly seen but also appears to be in timber painted red with two glazed upper panels. All of the openings within the basement and ground floor level bays are two pane timber frames sashes, these are likely a later insertion. The first and second floor windows are also timber framed sashes but are divided into four smaller panes by timber glazing bars. The timber frames on all windows are painted white, this paintwork is badly chipped and flaking away on the first and second floor windows. Overall the windows are in a good condition with all panes present and in tact.

The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet but it appears to be hipped and in slate with a brick stack located over the south eastern party wall. (1)
