Full Description
A hotroom (caldarium) was identified during excavations in advance of the CTRL HS1. The remains form part of a detached bath-house built after 160AD and added to in several phases by the first half of the 3rd century (1). This hotroom is from the earliest phase. The room measured 4.50 m by 4.0 m and was built on the north side of the range.
The external wall was 0.80 m thick with alternating courses of chalk blocks and tile, bonded with opus signinum and filled inside with a flint rubble core. The floor was surfaced with opus signinum with an area . 3.10 m by 1.10 m surviving in the eastern part of the room. Traces of pilae – ceramic fragments and square mortar bases – suggest that the room had a hypocaust during this phase of use.
