Findspot record TQ 64 SW 2 - Prehistoric axes, Bassett's Farm, Pembury

Summary

A hoard of three flint axes of Neolithic or early Bronze Age date were found accidentally in 1950 during digging near Bassett's Farm. There were no usage marks and they were discovered a long distance from the nearest source of material. On this basis it was suggested that they were buried for later usage, possibly even a traders hoard.

Full Description

(TQ) 642419. Ne or possibly EBA hoard of flint axes. Three Ne or possibly EBA flint axes were found accidentally by W.F. Francis of Pembury in June 1950 while digging near Bassett's Farm. They were lying close together in sandy soil at a depth of about 1 foot. They are in Tunbridge Wells Museum. No 1 is 9in long and in mint condition. No 2 is 7in in length and has sustained slight damage as indicated by broken line on drawing (see illus card). No 3 similarly damaged is 6.4in long. None show any evidence of use and their distance from the nearest source of material makes it reasonable to suppose that they were toolsburied for saftey until wanted. [Author, however, mentions the possibility of it being a votive or ritual deposit.] (1) Preliminary notice of find. Probably a trader's hoard. Number found given as three 'lying side by side'. (2) Brief note of find; number given as four '...identified by Dr J C M. Given of Tunbridge Wells' 'Lying side by side'. (3) Mr C Francis, (a) brother of the finder, and present at the time of discovery, indicated the find-spot at TQ 64114188. Three axes were discovered beneath a small mound whilst constructing afence around a spruce plantation in June 1950. They are now on display in Tunbridge Wells Museum. (4)
