Full Description
Forms part of a terrace of C19th buildings located on the south western side of London Road on a raised pavement which is separated from the busy London Road below by a possibly original iron railing. It is in a brown brick with a rendered and painted (white) basement level. The brickwork on this building is not continuous with that of its north western neighbour suggesting that they were constructed at different times. The door is located on the north western side of the façade; it is raised from the street level and accessed via a set of 11 steps with a, possibly original, iron railing on the southern side. These steps are untidy with a fair amount of vegetation growth attached to them and the paintwork on the area beneath them is chipped. There is painted brick wall on the northern side of these steps separating the front garden area from that of the north western neighbour, the paintwork is also in a poor condition and flaking away/chipped in several locations. The door is round headed and there is a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. The arched brickwork over this door is painted white. A further door is located beneath the steps up to the ground floor level, providing separate access to the basement level. There is a single window on all floors, aligning across the floors and located in the southern half of the façade. All windows apart from the basement level window have rendered and painted flat gauged brick arches above. There is a rendered string course located at the base of the first floor window and forms a continuous sill to it. This string course is present at the same level on the south western neighbouring building. The paintwork on this string is in a poor condition and is flaking away in several locations. A parapet with stone coping is located over the second floor level, some wiring runs from behind this parapet down to the basement level over the south eastern party wall. This is likely associated with an aerial attached to the stack. There is a painted brick wall in front of the property, separating the small and untidy front garden area from the street level, the paintwork on this wall is in a poor condition. Overall, despite some areas of untidiness the building appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.
The ground floor door, which is located on the north western side of the façade, modern and in timber painted green with six moulded panels and a semi-circular window at its top. It is round headed with a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. The paintwork on both the door and the timber frame of the door is in a poor condition. This window is likely a later replacement and consists of a single pane with a timber frame. All other windows are later plastic replacements, the frames and the glass are dirty, but all panes are present and intact.
The roof level was not seen from the street as it is located behind a parapet. Aerial photography suggests that it’s a double apex gable with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. A brick stack is visible over the south eastern party wall with a tall aerial attached.
Is of a similar date to many of the other buildings within this terrace though is in a slightly different style and is not listed. (1)
