Full Description
Forms part of a terrace of C19th buildings located on the south western side of London Road on a raised pavement which is separated from the busy London Road below by a possibly original iron railing. It is in a brown brick with a rendered and painted (white) basement level. The door is located on the south eastern side of the façade; it is raised from the street level and accessed via a set of nine steps with a possibly original, iron railing on their northern side. These steps are untidy with a fair amount of vegetation growth attached to them and the render/paintwork on the area beneath them is chipped and cracked. There is painted brick wall on the southern side of these steps separating them from those of the south eastern neighbour, the paintwork is also in a poor condition and flaking away/chipped in several locations. The door is round headed and there is a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. A further door is located beneath the steps up to the ground floor level, providing separate access to the basement level. There is a single window on all floors, aligning across the floors and located in the northern half of the façade. All windows apart from the basement level window have flat gauged brick arches above. There is a rendered string course located at the base of the first floor window and forms a continuous sill to it. This string course is present at the same level on both neighbouring buildings. The paintwork on this string is in a poor condition and is flaking away in several locations. A fair amount of untidy wiring is located over this string course, this is likely associated with a security system attached to the brickwork at the first floor level. A parapet with stone coping is located over the second floor level, a modern plastic down pipe runs through a gap in the brickwork at the base of this parapet, down to the basement level over the north western party wall. There is a brick wall in front of the property, separating the small and untidy front garden area from the street level, with a tall gate pier at its north western end and an iron railing above. This railing is badly damaged and in a poor condition. Overall, despite some areas of untidiness the building appears to be structurally sound and is in a fairly good condition.
The ground floor door, which is located on the south eastern side of the façade, is possibly original and in timber painted black with seven panels. It is round headed with a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. This window is likely a later replacement and consists of a single pane with a timber frame. All windows consist of timber framed sashes of a likely late C19th date. those on the ground, first and second floor levels are divided into four large rectangular panes by timber glazing bars while the basement level window is divided into six – three in each part of the sash. The timber frames are all painted white and all windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof level was not seen from the street as it is located behind a parapet. Aerial photography suggests that it’s a double apex gable with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. A brick stack is visible over the north western party wall with a tall aerial attached.
Is of a similar date to many of the other buildings within this terrace though is in a slightly different style and is not listed. (1)
