Full Description
Forms part of a terrace of C19th buildings located on the south western side of London Road on a raised pavement which is separated from the busy London Road below by a possibly original iron railing. It is in a brown brick with a rendered and painted (blue) basement level. The door is located on the north western side of the façade; it is raised from the street level and accessed via a set of nine steps with a modern iron railing on their southern side. There is a rendered and painted brick wall on the northern side of these steps separating them from those of the north western neighbour, this wall is in a poor condition with a severe crack. The door is round headed and there is a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. A further door is located at the basement level below the ground floor window with a small window on its southern side, both are likely later insertions. There is a single window on all floors, all apart from the basement window align across the floors and are located in the southern half of the façade with flat gauged brick arches above. There is a rendered and painted (blue) string course located at the base of the first floor window, this forms a continuous sill to it. This string course is present at the same level on both neighbouring buildings. The paintwork on this string is in a poor condition and is flaking away in several locations. All other windows have small protruding sills, these are all painted blue with the paintwork also in a poor condition. Some untidy wiring is attached to and crosses the façade at various locations, particularly above the string course, this is associated with several modern features including an aerial attached to the brickwork at the top of the ground floor. A parapet with stone coping is located over the second floor level, a fair amount of vegetation growth is attached to this parapet. There is a brick wall in front of the property with a possibly original iron railing above, separating the small and untidy front garden area from the street level. Overall, despite some areas of untidiness the building appears to be structurally sound and is in a fairly good condition.
The ground floor door, which is located on the north western side of the façade, is modern and in timber painted black with a large glazed upper panel. It is round headed with a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. This window is likely a later replacement and consists of a single pane with a timber frame. The basement door is also modern and in timber painted black with four rectangular panels and a semi-circular window ait its top divided into four triangular panes. the basement level window is small with a timber frame. All other windows are later C20th plastic replacements. All windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof level was not seen from the street as it is located behind a parapet. Aerial photography suggests that it’s a double apex gable with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. A rendered brick stack is visible over the south eastern party wall with a tall aerial attached.
Is of a similar date to many of the other buildings within this terrace though is in a slightly different style and is not listed. (1)
