Full Description
Forms the end of a short terrace on the north western side of London Road, at the junction between London Road and Templar Street. The ground floor and basement level appear to have a commercial use. It is in a mix of red and brown brick (red brick at the ground floor and brown on the first floor) with a rendered and painted (white) basement level. The London Road side is narrower than the Templar street side, there is a large three light canted bay with rendered mullions and moulded cornice located centrally at both the ground floor and basement levels on the London Road side. A modern door has been inserted into the central portion of the bay at the basement level. The floor in front of this basement level door is tiled with original Victorian tiles. There are two windows at the first floor level, these are closely spaced and together they are the same width as the bay below. Both have segmental brick arches above. There are two rendered bands crossing the façade, both are level with the tops of the windows at the ground and first floor. There is also a stone string course at the base of the first floor level, forming a continuous sill to both first floor windows. Both the rendered bands and the string course are painted grey. There is a decorative brick cornice directly below the eaves at the top of the first floor level. A single dormer window is located centrally at the roof level. Many of the features present on the London Road side continue onto the Templar Street side of the building including the rendered bands. There is a ground floor door located just off centre and raised from the pavement level by five steps with a low rendered walls on both sides. This door possibly provides access to the residential upper floors. A further door is located beneath the steps up to the ground floor level, though this was not clearly seen. A blocked window is located on the eastern side of the ground floor door, like the windows on the London Road side, this has a segmental brick arch above. The first-floor level is rendered across the whole of the Templar Street side, the base this rests on the string course which also continues from the London Road side of the building. There are pilasters at either end and three arches over the central portion of this render. It is unclear as to the function of this render, but it may originally have been used for commercial signage. A second blocked window is located centrally within the gable end over the first floor, again with a segmental brick arch. A brick parapet rises over this gable end with decorative red brick detailing at its top. Several modern features are attached to this side of the building, including two tall aerials and their associated wiring. The western (rear) elevation is also visible from the street, this is in a mix of brick rubble with brick dressings. A further large dormer is located centrally at the roof level on the western side also. A low rendered and painted (white) brick wall with a (possibly original) iron railing over is located on both the London Road and Templar Street sides of the property, separating it from the pavement. Overall this building appears to structurally sound and in a good condition.
On the London Road side of the building there is a single large three light canted bay window at the basement and ground floor levels. The window frames within these all appear to be modern. The central is portion of each is approximately double the width of the two outer. At the ground floor level, they are blocked with advertising relating to the commercial use of the property. A modern door has been inserted into the central portion of the basement bay. The first floor windows are both modern with plastic frames. There is a gabled dormer located centrally at the roof level, this has a timber frame and is divided into two panes, the lower is large and fixed while the upper is a small rectangular awning. The frame is painted white and there are some small chips to the paintwork. The eaves of the gabled roof of this dormer overhang and there are decorative timber fascia boards located beneath it. The ground floor level door on the Templar Street side of the property is possibly original and in timber painted grey with four rectangular panels, the upper two of which are glazed. There is a rectangular window located above the transom over this door, this consists of a single fixed pane in a timber frame also painted grey. the door located beneath the steps up to the ground floor level was not clearly seen. The windows on the western (rear) elevation appear to be later replacements though are in an in-keeping style for the age of the building. Those which are visible from the street level consist of timber framed sashes. All windows and doors are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof is gabled and in slate with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. There are two large gabled dormers located centrally on each side of the roof. A brick stack is located at the ridge over the north western party wall. Overall the roof appears to be in a good condition. (1)
