Full Description
Though there is a date of 1837 on the front of the building, this refers to an earlier pub at this site, which this replaced when the northern side of Ladywell was demolished in 1900 to widen the road. The façade is highly decorative and in a mock Tudor style with a jettied first and second floor. The ground floor is set back from the jettied first floor and covered in ornate original, late Victorian tiles. There are four doors with three windows between the doors, all doors have a semi-circular overlight, and the upper part of the central window is also semi-circular. The other two windows are small and circular. Two of the doors and the central window are set back further from the main façade and the first floor overhangs them more here than over the outer two doors, with highly decorative scrolled and tiled brackets supporting it. The first and second floors are timbered, with pebble dash in the areas between the timbers. These timbers are not structural and are for purely decorative purposes, apart from beneath the jettied second floor where numerous timber brackets appear to support it. There are two windows per floor, these align across the floors and there is a large triangular pediment (also timbered and pebble dashed) at the roof level over both of the second floor windows. a number of modern features are located across the façade, including lights and a satellite dish. Overall this is a highly decorative late Victorian building which survives in tact with numerous ornate original features.
There are four doors, all are original four panelled timber doors, three of which have glazed upper panels. All doors have semi-circular overflights above the transoms over the doors. There are three windows at the ground floor level, located between the doors, the central is rectangular with a semi circular pane at its top. The other two windows are located within the curved angle towards the recessed central portion of the ground floor and are circular in a decorative original stained glass. There are two windows per floor at the first and second floor levels, aligning across the floors. The first-floor windows are bowed and each is divided into three parts by timber mullions, each of which is again divided in two by a timber transom. The upper parts of each are approx. 1/3rd the size of the lower and are small leaded square panes. All parts are casement with timber frames painted white. The second floor windows are the same as the first floor windows but lack the bowing. The paintwork on some of the frames is slightly chipped but otherwise the windows and doors are in a good condition with all panes present and in tact.
The roof is gabled and steeply pitched with the gable ends over the north eastern and south western party walls. It is covered in ceramic tiles and there are decorative tiles over the ridge. Two tall brick axial stacks are located over the party walls, the southern has an aerial attached to it. There is a small amount of vegetation growth within the modern gutter which is attached to the roof at the eaves level. The roof structure and stacks appear to be in a good condition with no bowing or obvious slipped tiles. (1)
