Full Description

Mid C19th building in brick with a painted (cream) brick ground floor, forms the eastern end Castle Street on its northern side, on the junction between Eastbrook Place/Maison Dieu Road and Castle Street. The Castle Street façade is much narrower than the Eastbrook Place side, it has a single centrally placed canted bay window at the ground floor level, this is a later insertion. A modern commercial sign is attached to the brickwork directly above this ground floor window. There are two windows on both the first and second floor levels, aligning across the floors, all have gauged flat brick arches over. A rendered and painted (green) string course at the top of the ground floor level forms a continuous sill to the two first floor windows. The ‘Castle Street’ street sign is attached to the brickwork directly above this string course next to the south western corner of the building. There is a rendered parapet over the second floor behind which is a single centrally placed dormer window. An aerial is attached to the top of the parapet in front of the dormer with its associated wiring draped untidily across the façade. Further modern features are attached to the façade including two satellite dishes and a flag pole attached to the brickwork at the first floor level, as well as a security system at the ground floor, again with the untidy wiring crossing the façade at various locations. The Easterbrook Place side of the building is also painted (cream) at the ground floor level with the rendered and painted (green) string course continuing above it. A ‘Maison Dieu Road/Eastbrook Place’ street sign is located above this string course next to the south eastern corner of the building. The main ground floor access is on this side of the building. The door is round headed and set within a slight recess in the brickwork, a small hole in the brickwork at the pavement level, next to the door is likely to originally have been for a boot scraper. There is a semi-circular fanlight located above the transom over the door. A single window is located at the ground floor level on the southern side of the door. Another modern sign is located above this window. There is a single window at the first and second floor levels, both aligning with the ground floor door. Both have flat gauged brick arches over and the string course forms a sill to the first floor window here also. Two further blocked (with brick) windows are located on the southern side of the façade, one each on the first and second floors. These align with the ground floor window and have flat gauged brick arches above and the string course above the ground floor also forms a continuous sill to the blocked first floor window. A parapet with stone coping is located above the second floor, this is not as tall as the parapet present on the Castle Street side of the building and lacks the rendered band. There is a small dormer window located centrally at the roof level behind this parapet. Overall this building is well kept and in a good condition.

The main ground floor access is through a door located on the Eastbrook Place side of the building. The door is possibly original and in timber painted green with four moulded rectangular panels and a large square glazed panel. There is a semi-circular fanlight located above the transom over the door, this is likely a later insertion and consists of a single pane in a timber frame. The other ground floor windows are later insertions. The Castle Street ground floor window consists of a large three light canted bay window with a modern plastic frame. The Eastbrook Place ground floor window consists of a single large fixed pane in a timber frame. There are six windows located across the first and second floors, four on the Castle Street side and two on the Eastbrook Place side. All consist of original timber framed sashes divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. The four on the Castle Street side are divided into 12 panes (three wide by four high) the first floor window on the Eastbrook Place side is also divided into 12 but the second floor window here is not as tall and is only divided into nine panes. there are two dormer windows located at the roof level, one on each side of the property. Both are timber framed casements, the Castle Street side dormer is divided into four square panes (two in each part of the casement) while the other is divided into 12 very small rectangular panes (six in each part of the casement). All the timber window frames are painted white. All windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof is a hipped mansard and in slate with metallic flashing over the ridges and angles. There is a rendered stack over the western party wall. The roof structure appears to be in a good condition with no signs of bowing or slipped slates. (1)
