Full Description
Large early C19th detached building in an exposed yellow brick located on the southern side of Castle Hill Road. The ground floor is in stucco painted cream and rusticated. There is some staining and discolouration to this stucco as well as a few cracks. The door is located on the western side of the façade, there is a small rectangular window located above the transom over this door. It is beneath a porch with large Tuscan columns and a moulded cornice above. A further door is located beneath the ground floor door, providing separate access to the basement level. This is accessed from the road level via a set of steps, the top of which are located on the eastern side of the building. The basement level is separated from the street by a set of original cast iron spear head railings. There is a single window located on the eastern side of the doors at both the ground floor and basement levels, these windows align with each other. There are two windows on both the first and second floor levels, both have flat gauged brick arches above and the first floor windows have original cast iron balconettes. A string course is located above the stucco over the ground floor, this forms a continuous sill to both the first floor windows. The render over this string course is chipped and cracked and there is vegetation attached to it. There is a rendered band over a small parapet at the top of the second floor, again this render is discoloured, chipped and cracked. Two small dormer windows are located at the roof level behind this parapet, aligning with the windows on the floors below. The western side elevation is in an exposed brick across all floors with no openings. Despite some areas of untidiness where improvements could be made to this building, it appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The ground floor door, which is located on the western side of the façade, beneath a porch, is in timber painted black with four moulded panels. There is a small rectangular window located above the transom over the door, this is in a fixed frame painted white. The basement level door was not clearly seen. All of the windows apart from the dormers, which are later plastic insertions, are timber framed sashes. The first and second floor windows are divided into 12 panes by timber glazing bars (three wide by four high). The ground floor windows glazing has been altered (possibly in the later C19th and it is divided into four large rectangular panes. The glazing in the basement level window has also been altered, this is divided into six panes (three wide by two high). All of the timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is chipped and dirty on all of the windows. Despite some damage to the paintwork, all windows are in a good condition with all panes present and in tact.
The roof is mansard and in slate, with metallic flashing over the join between the angles. There are two dormer windows (discussed above) within the lower angle of the roof. The roof level over the western (side) elevation is clad in modern slates. A tall rendered stack is located over the eastern party wall. There are a couple of loose slates visible from the street level but otherwise the roof level appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition with no signs of bowing. (1)
