Full Description
Tall and fairly large mid C19th building in stuccoed and painted (cream) brick, located on the northern side of Castle Hill Road. The western end of the building is set back from the street level and the main portion of the façade. This part of the building is stucco at the ground floor and basement levels but in an exposed brick on the upper floors. The door is located within this western portion of the building, it is raised from the street level and accessed via a set of seven steps. There are rendered and painted (cream walls on either sides of these steps. An original and decorative elliptical window is located above the transom over the door and there are two narrow windows on either side, immediately abutting the door jambs. A further door is located beneath this ground floor door, providing separate access to the basement level. There is a window at the first and second floor levels within this recessed portion of the building, aligning with the ground floor door. Both have flat gauged brick arches above and a small parapet is located at the top of the second floor. The main portion of the façade is stucco across all floors and there are two windows per floor aligning across the floors. The eaves overhang the top of the second floor on this part of the building and a gutter down pipe runs from the base of the eaves down to the basement level over the eastern party wall. The basement area is separated from the street level by a set of (likely original) cast iron spear head railings over a low brick wall. The western of the two basement level windows has been extended to form a glazed door. A dormer window is located at the roof level, aligning with the eastern second floor window. Several modern features are attached to the façade at various locations, including a large metal flag pole. Overall this building appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.
The ground floor door is located within the western portion of the facade, it is original and in timber painted dark green with six moulded panels. There is an original and decorative elliptical window located above the transom over the door. This is in a timber frame painted white and appears to be fixed. Two narrow windows are located immediately abutting the jambs on either side of the door, again these are in fixed timber frames painted white. The basement level door was not clearly seen. The Western of the two basement level windows within the main portion of the façade has been extended and converted in to a door. This door is divided into two parts with hinges on the outer jambs. Both parts are glazed and divided into four square panes by timber glazing bars. All other windows are timber framed sashes divided into six rectangular panes (three wide by two high) by timber glazing bars. The dormer window is also timber framed, this is divided into 12 small panes by timber glazing bars and appears to be within a fixed frame. All of the timber frames are painted white, there are some chips to the paintwork, particularly on the dormer window. Otherwise all windows and doors are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The main part of the roof is hipped and in slate. There is a tall brick stack located over the eastern party wall. The roof of the western, recessed portion of the building was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet, though is possibly flat. The roof structure appears to be in a good condition with no signs of bowing or slipped slates. (1)
