Full Description
Early- mid C19th tall and narrow semi- detached building in an exposed brick located on the southern side of Castle Hill Road. The ground floor is in stucco painted cream and rusticated. The paintwork over this stucco is chipped and discoloured in several locations and there are a few large cracks within it. The door is located on the eastern side of the façade, it is slightly raised from the street level and has a small rectangular window above the transom over the door. A set or simple iron railings are located on either side of the steps up to the door. There is a single large window on the western side of the door with a timber surround and moulded cornice above painted green. A small rectangular window is located below this window, at the pavement level, indicating the presence of a basement below this building. An original and decorative cast iron balcony is located at the first floor level. This balcony is in a fairly poor condition and bows slightly towards the centre. There is a French window/doors located centrally at the first floor level opening onto this balcony. Narrow windows are located on either sides of this French window, immediately abutting the jambs. Like the ground floor window, these windows have a timber surround and moulded cornice above painted green. The second and third floor windows are located centrally, both have flat gauged brick arches above. There is a rendered band and moulded cornice over the second floor. This cornice is badly weathered and worn with areas where the render has flaked away. It is possible that this cornice would have originally been at the top of this building and the third floor is a later addition. A rendered and painted cream parapet is located over the top of the third floor, this render is in a poor condition with many chips to the paintwork and several cracks. Two rendered pilasters run from the base of the cornice at the top of the second floor down to the top of the ground floor over each of the party walls. Overall there are several areas on this building where improvements could be made, though it appears to be structurally sound.
The ground floor door is located on the eastern side of the building, it is in timber painted green with six moulded panels and a decorative central knocker. There is a small rectangular window located above the transom over the door in a fixed timber frame painted white. The ground floor window is a large and very slight three light canted bay. The mullions have timber pilasters over painted green. The central portion is much wider than the two outer and each part consists of a timber framed sash divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. A set of French windows/doors are located centrally at the first floor level, opening onto a small balcony. The upper part of each door is glazed and divided into 12 panes of an unequal size by timber glazing bars. There are narrow windows immediately abutting the jambs of this French window/door, each consists of a timber framed sash divided into multiple panes (a single pane wide by four high). The second and third floor windows consist of simple timber framed sashes, again these are divided into 16 panes by timber glazing bars. while the second floor window is divided into All of the timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is chipped and dirty in places. There is a small rectangular window located at the pavement level below the ground floor door, this is divided into four small square panes in an opaque glass. Overall despite some chips to the paintwork all windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact. (1)
