Full Description

Early- mid C19th tall and narrow building in an exposed stock brick located on the southern side of Castle Hill Road. The ground floor is in stucco painted cream and rusticated. There are several large cracks within this render and areas of discoloration on the paintwork covering it, this is particularly bad beneath the ground floor window. The door is located on the eastern side of the façade, it is slightly raised from the street level and is accessed via a set of steps. It is round headed and there is a small semi-circular window above the transom over the door. There is a single ground floor window located on the western side of the door, this consists of a three light canted bay. A small rectangular window is located below the central portion of this bay window, at the pavement level, indicating the presence of a basement below this building. There is a string course at the top of the stucco over the ground floor, this forms a continuous sill to the first floor windows and continues onto the building to the west. There are two windows at the first, second and third floor levels, aligning across the floors. All have flat gauged brick arches above. There is a rendered and moulded cornice over the second floor. This cornice is in a poor condition with areas of vegetation growth attached to it and places where it is badly weathered and worn with the render and paintwork flaking away. There are a few small cracks in the brickwork across the façade, particularly within the areas between the first and second floor windows. Overall there are several areas on this building where improvements could be made, despite this it appears to be relatively structurally sound.

The ground floor door is located on the eastern side of the building, it is in timber painted white with six moulded panels. It is round headed and there is a semi circular window located above the transom over the door. This consists of a single pane in a fixed timber frame painted grey. The ground floor window consists of a three light canted bay. Each of the three parts of the bay is a timber framed sash divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. The central portion which is three panes wide by four high, is much wider than the two outer which are a single pane wide. There are several cracks visible on the timber frame of this bay and one of the panes within the central part of the bay is broken. All of the windows on the upper floors are flat timber framed sashes divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. The first and second floor windows are divided into 12 panes (three wide by four high) while the third floor windows are not as tall and are divided into nine panes (three wide by three high). All of the timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is in a poor condition in a number of locations. Overall many of the windows could do with improvement and could worsen if left in the current condition. (1)
