Full Description
Victorian building in an exposed red brick on the Western side of St James’s Street, near the between St James’s Street and Woolcomber Street. The door is located on the south western side of the façade, there is a narrow window on its southern side immediately abutting the southern door jamb. A large semi-circular brick arch is located above the door with a central keystone. The area between the transom over the door and the brick arch is filled with decorative ceramic tiles. There are two closely spaced windows on the northern side of the door, both have segmental brick arches above and central keystones. Two small vents are located at the pavement level below these ground floor windows, indicating the presence of a basement below this building. There are two windows at the first floor level, the southern aligns with the door and is flat while the northern consists of a canted oriel bay window with a flat roof, and is the same width at the two ground floor windows. There is a moulded and painted (black) string course located at the top of the first floor level, immediately over the windows. Above this string course the building is clad with orange, ceramic tiles. There are two windows at the second floor level both are flat and align with the openings on the floor below. The eaves rest directly over the second floor windows and there is modern guttering at the base of the eaves. a fair amount of vegetation is located within this guttering. A modern gutter down pipe runs from the base of the eaves down to the pavement level over the northern party wall. Several modern features are attached to the façade at various locations, including a modern security system. The wiring associated with his is draped untidily across the façade. The western (rear elevation is rendered and painted white across all floors. Overall despite some areas of untidiness this building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The door is located on the southern side of the façade, it is in timber painted black with six moulded panels. A narrow window is located on the southern side of the door, immediately abutting the southern door jamb. This appears to be fixed within a timber frame painted black. The two ground floor level windows are both timber framed sashes. The upper part of each of the sashes is divided into six small rectangular panes while the lower is divided into two larger panes by timber glazing bars. The southern first floor window is divided into four parts by timber mullions and transoms. The two upper parts are small and divided into six very small panes each. The lower parts are both large single panes. The northern window consists of a canted bay divided into four sections by timber mullions. As with the other first floor window, it is split horizontally into two parts with the upper parts divided into six small panes and the lower single large panes. The two second floor windows are all casement, the southern is divided into two parts, each of which is two square panes while the northern is divided into four parts again each part is two square panes. All of the window frames are in timber painted white. Overall all windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof is gabled and in slate with the gable ends over the northern and southern party walls. There is a brick stack located at the ridge over the northern party wall. The roof is in a very good condition and appears to have been recently replaced. (1)
