Full Description

Early-Mid C19th building in an exposed stock brick across all floors, located on the Western side of St James’s Street. One of only three original buildings remaining on this street. The door is located on the southern side of the façade. It is round headed and there is a small semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. The door has a decorative surround with fluted stylised pilasters on either side supporting a triangular pediment. An original boot scraper is located at the base of the northern pilaster. There are two windows on the northern side of this door at the ground floor level with two small openings at the pavement level beneath these windows. The northern of these two pavement level openings is covered with metal bars while the southern is blocked with timber, both indicate the presence of a basement below this building. There are three equally spaced windows at both the first and second floor levels, the northern two align with the ground floor windows. All windows have flat gauged brick arches above and small timber sills. A brick parapet with stone coping rises over the top of the second floor. The northern (side) elevation is rendered across all floors. there are four small windows, one at the ground floor level, two at the first floor and a fourth at the second floor. The western (rear) elevation is in an exposed stock brick across all floors. There is a single window on each of the floors located centrally within the façade and aligning across the floors. Overall, despite the fact that this building is currently empty, it is structurally sound and in a good condition.

The door is located on the southern side of the façade, it is in timber painted white with six panels and a decorative central knocker. There is a small semi circular window located above the transom over the door. This is likely a later insertion and consists of two panes within a fixed timber frame painted white. All of the windows on this elevation are original timber framed sashes divided into 12 panes (three wide by four high) by timber glazing bars. The windows on the northern (side) elevation all appear to be later insertions. The windows on the western (rear) elevation are also timber framed sashes. The ground and first floor sashes are divided into 16 panes (four wide by four high while the second floor sash is 12 panes (three wide by four high). All of the timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is in a good condition. Overall all of the windows and the door are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof is hipped and tiled. There is a fair amount of lichen and moss growth attached to the tiles. There is a brick stack located over the northern party wall. The roof structure appears to be in a good condition with no signs of bowing or obvious slipped tiles. (1)
