Full Description

Tall, relatively narrow mid C19th building located on the northern side of Castle Street in an exposed brick. The whole building is slightly recessed from its western neighbour but is flush with its eastern. The door is raised slightly from the street level and located on the western side of the façade. The surround is rendered and painted cream. A rectangular window located above the transom over the door. There is a further door located directly below the ground floor door, providing separate access to the basement level. This is accessed from the street level via a set of steep steps, the top of which is located on the eastern side of the building. There is a single window at the basement and ground floor levels, these align across the floors. There are two windows at the first and second floors, again these align across the floors. All windows have flat gauged brick arches above. A rendered and painted string course is located at the top of the ground floor, this forms a continuous sill to the first floor windows and it continues onto the buildings to the east. There is coping over the brickwork at the top of the second floor and the roof level is set back slightly from the main façade behind it. A central dormer window is located within the lower, steeper angle of the mansard roof. A metal gutter down pipe is located over the eastern party wall. This runs through a gap in the brickwork just below the coping down to the basement level. There is a large amount of vegetation attached to this down pipe, particularly within the hopper at its top. The brickwork at the basement level is rendered and painted cream. The basement area is separated from the street by a set of (possibly original) cast iron spear head railings. These railings continue on either side of the steps up to the ground floor door. Several modern features are attached to the façade at various locations, including a security system, the wiring for which is draped untidily across the façade. Overall despite some areas of untidiness this building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.

The door, which is located on the western side of the façade, is possibly original in timber painted green with four panels, the upper two of which are glazed. There is a small rectangular window located above the transom over the door. This has a timber frame painted white and appears to be fixed. There are six windows located across the façade. All appear to be later (possibly late C19th or early C20th) insertions and consist of two pane timber framed sashes. The dormer window is also a later insertion and consists of two panes divided horizontally into a large, square fixed lower pane and a narrow rectangular awning above. All of the timber frames are painted white. All windows and the door are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof is mansard and in slate. There is metallic flashing at the join between the two angles. A large central dormer window (discussed above) is located in the lower angle of the roof. A brick stack is visible over the eastern party wall, a fair amount of vegetation attached to this. The roof structure appears to be in a good condition with no signs of bowing or slipped slates.
