Full Description
Tall, relatively narrow mid C19th building located on the northern side of Castle Street in an exposed brick. The ground floor projects forward from the main façade and has a commercial use. It retains many possibly C19th date shop front details including; Pilasters and consoles over each of the party walls, timber stall risers below the window and a moulded cornice over the windows and door. Glazed bricks are located on the pavement immediately in front of this building, suggesting the presence of a basement below it. The door is and located on the eastern side of the façade. It is in timber painted light grey with a large glazed panel and a rectangular window is located above the transom over the door. There is a single window at the first and second floor levels, aligning across all floors. Both are set within a slight recess within the brickwork and the second floor window has a painted flat gauged brick arch above. Both windows appear to be later (possibly late C19th) insertions; the first floor window consists of a three light canted bay with a moulded cornice and flat metallic roof above. The base of this bay rests upon the projecting ground floor. A rendered and painted (white) string course is located at the top of the ground floor, this this is largely obscured by the bay window but continues onto the buildings on both sides. A brick parapet with concrete coping is located over the top of the second floor. A metal gutter down pipe runs though a gap in the brickwork at the base of the parapet and runs down to the ground floor level over the western party wall. Several modern features including a security system and a metal flag pole are attached to the brickwork across the façade. Overall this building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The door, which is located on the eastern side of the façade within the projecting commercial ground floor. It is likely modern and in timber painted light grey with a large rectangular glazed panel. There is a rectangular window located above the transom over the door. This consists of a single pane in a fixed timber frame. Most of the rest of the ground floor is occupied by a large window. This is divided into four large panes, the horizontal divide aligns with the top of the door while the vertical is central. The divides and the frame are in timber painted white. There are two windows in the western side of the façade at the first and second floor level, both are likely later insertions. The first floor window consists of a three light canted bay. Each of the three parts of the bay consists of a timber framed sash, the central portion is wider than the outer and divided into four rectangular panes while the outer are two pane sashes. The second floor window is divided into three casements, the upper is horizontal while the two lower are vertical. All timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is in a good condition. Overall all windows and the door are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet though it appears to be in slate and gabled with the gable ends over the eastern and western party walls. Two tall rendered stacks are located over each of the party walls. (1)
