Full Description

C19th building located on the northern side of Castle Street and backing directly onto the River Dour, in an exposed brick. The building has three bays across all floors and may have originally been three separate premises. There are three large – near floor to ceiling height, bow windows at the ground floor level, each is central within one of the three bays. Alongside these windows, there are two doors at the ground floor. One is located at the far eastern end of the façade, immediately abutting the eastern party wall while the other is located between the western and central windows. The whole of the ground floor is painted a light grey colour and is sheltered by a small open porch area with a slate shed roof supported by fluted timber brackets. There are three windows at both the first and second floor levels, aligning across both floors and located centrally within each of the bays. All six of these have painted (white) flat gauged brick arches above. There is a small fourth window at the far eastern end of the first floor, this is likely a later insertion. There is a brick parapet with concrete coping located at the top of the second floor. A metal gutter down pipe runs from the top of this parapet down to the basement level over the eastern party wall. The basement level is only visible beneath the easternmost of the three bays. It is also in a painted brick with a single window and is separated from the street by an original iron railing (painted white). A brick buttress is located over the eastern party wall, projecting towards the pavement. Several modern features are attached to the façade including a satellite dish and its associated wiring as well as numerous vents. Overall despite some small areas of untidiness this building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition

There are two doors at the ground floor level; eastern which likely provides access to the upper floors is in timber painted white while the western provides access to the commercial ground floor and is in timber painted white with a large glazed upper panel. There are three windows at the ground floor level, each is located centrally within one of the three bays. All three consist of large bow windows, divided into 36 small rectangular panes (six wide by six high) within a fixed timber frame. There are six windows across the first and second floors, all aligning with the ground floor windows, all consists of original timber framed sashes divided into 12 rectangular panes by timber glazing pars. All of these timber frames are painted white, some of the paintwork is chipped and dirty. There is a seventh small window located at the far eastern end of the façade, at the first-floor level. This appears to be a later insertion. A single basement level window is visible below the easternmost of the ground floor windows. This appears to be a later insertion and consists of a two pane casement window with a timber frame painted blue. Overall despite some damage and untidiness to the paintwork on some of the windows, all are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof level was not clearly visible as it is located behind a parapet. (1)
