Full Description

Large, double fronted mid C19th building located on the southern side of Castle Street in an exposed brick. The door is raised from the street level and located centrally within the façade. It is located within a slight recess within the brickwork, this brickwork is painted white. The door is round headed and there is an original and decorative semi-circular window located above the transom over this door. There is a further door located directly below the ground floor door, providing separate access to the basement level. This is accessed from the street level via a set of steep steps, the top of which is located on the eastern side of the building. There are two windows, one on either side of the door, at both the ground floor level. A single basement level window aligns with the eastern of these two ground floor windows. There are three windows per floor on the first and second floor levels, these align with the openings at the ground floor. All windows have painted (white) flat gauged brick arches above. A rendered and painted (white) string course is located over the ground floor, this forms a continuous sill to the three first floor windows and also continues onto the building to the west. There is a rendered band and moulded cornice over a parapet at the top of the second floor level. This is painted white and is slightly weathered and stained. The basement level is in painted (white) brick and is separated from the street by a set of (possibly original) cast iron spear head railings. These railings continue on either side of the steps up to the ground floor door. Several modern features are attached to the façade at various locations, including lights, a security system and metal flag poles. Overall this building is well kept, appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.

The door, which is located centrally within the façade is possibly original in timber painted dark green with five moulded panels. An original and decorative semi-circular window is located above the transom over the door. This is within a within a fixed timber frame painted black. A further door is located directly beneath the ground floor door, providing separate access to the basement level, this was not clearly seen. There are nine windows located across the façade all appear to be original timber framed sashes divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. The ground, first and second floor level windows are all divided into 12 panes (three wide by four high) while the basement level window is divided into 16 smaller panes (four wide by four high). All of the timber frames and glazing bars are painted white, this paintwork is in a good condition. Overall all windows and the door are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof level was not seen as it is located behind a parapet. (1)
