Full Description
Mid C19th building located on the southern side of Castle Street, it is on a smaller scale than the buildings located on its eastern side. The ground floor and basement level is stuccoed and painted (cream). This stucco is scored over the ground floor to give the impression of large block construction. The first and second floors are hung with modern tiles. The door is located on the western side of the façade it is round headed but the semi-circular window above the transom over the door has been blocked. There are decorative fluted pilasters located within a recess on either side of the door, both are painted white. There is a single window at the basement, ground, first and second floor levels, all are located on the eastern side of the façade. The first floor window is a three light canted oriel bay window, this is likely a later insertion. All other windows are flat. The eaves overhang the top of the second floor and there is a rendered band directly below the eaves and immediately above the second floor window. A possibly original gutter down pipe runs through a small gap in the façade just below this rendered band, down to the basement level over the eastern party wall. A fair amount of vegetation growth is located within the hopper at the top of this down pipe. The basement level is rendered and painted (cream), it is separated from the street by a set of (possibly original) cast iron spear head railings. These railings continue either side of the steps up to the ground floor door. The area behind this railing is very untidy and badly overgrown. Overall, despite some areas of untidiness this building appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.
The door, which is located on the western side of the façade is possibly original and in timber painted black with six moulded panels. It appears to be fixed in place and there is a great deal of vegetation located directly in front of it. The door is round headed and there would originally have been a window above the transom over the door but this has been blocked and painted (cream) to match the render at the ground floor level. There are four windows, one per floor on each of the floors, all of which are on the eastern side of the façade. The basement level window was not clearly seen as it is covered by a set of heavy iron railings. The ground floor and second floor level windows are both timber framed sashes. The ground floor window is divided into four large panes by timber glazing bars while the second floor is divided into nine panes; three tall rectangular panes in the upper half and six small panes in the lower half. The first floor window is a three light canted bay, each of the three parts of the bay are timber framed sashes. The central is triple the width of the outer two and is divided into 12 small panes by timber glazing bars (three wide by four high) while both of the outer are four panes (one wide by four high). All of the timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is in a good condition. Overall all of the windows and the door are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof is hipped and in slate. There is a rendered stack located over the ridge above the western party wall. There is a fair amount of lichen growth attached to the slates, particularly on the eastern side of the roof. Overall the roof appears to be in a good condition and is structurally sound with no signs of bowing or slipped slates. (1)
