Full Description
Mid C19th building located on the southern side of Castle Street, at the junction between Castle Street and Russell Street. It is on a smaller scale than many of the buildings located along Castle Street. The ground floor and basement level is stuccoed and painted (cream). This stucco is scored over the ground floor to give the impression of large block construction. The first and second floors are hung with modern tiles. The door is located on the western side of the façade it is round headed. There is an original and highly decorative semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. Two decorative fluted pilasters are located within a recess on either side of the door, both are painted white. There is a single window at the ground floor level, on the eastern side of the door and two windows at both the first and second floor levels. The western windows on the first and second floor align with the door at the ground floor level. Small and possibly original cast iron balconettes are located over the lower halves of both first floor windows. The eaves overhang the top of the second floor and there is a rendered band directly below the eaves and immediately above the second floor windows. The basement level was not clearly seen. The building is separated from the street by a set of (possibly original) cast iron spear head railings. The area behind this railing is very untidy and badly overgrown. Overall, despite some areas of untidiness this building appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.
The door, which is located on the western side of the façade is possibly original and in timber painted black with six moulded panels. It is round headed and there is an original and highly decorative semi-circular window above the transom over the door. There are five (visible) windows, one at the ground floor level, on the eastern side of the door, and two each at the first and second floor levels. The ground floor window is a timber framed sash divided into four large rectangular panes by timber glazing bars. The second floor windows are also timber framed sashes though are divided into more and smaller panes (12 in total on each window – three wide by four high). The two first floor windows are both casement, each is split horizontally with hinges on the jambs and is divided into multiple panes of a variety of differing sizes by timber glazing bars. All of the timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is in a good condition. Overall all of the windows and the door are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof is hipped and in slate. There is a rendered stack located over the ridge above the eastern party wall. There is a fair amount of lichen and moss growth attached to the slates. Overall the roof appears to be in a good condition and is structurally sound with no signs of bowing or slipped slates. (1)
