Full Description
Early – mid C20th building located on the southern side of Castle Street at the junction between Castle Street and Dolphin Passage. The north western corner is set at angle to the rest of the building and the door is within this angled corner. The door surround is rendered, as are the surrounds of the two windows located within the angle above the door at the first and second floor levels. There are four bays on the Castle Street side of the building with a single window on each of the floors within each bay, 12 windows on this side in total. All of the ground floor openings have rendered surrounds. The first and second floor windows have flat gauged brick arches above and central keystones. There is a string course at the base of the first floor, located directly over the modern commercial fascia of the ground floor and forming a continuous sill to the first floor windows. There is a brick parapet with moulded concrete coping over the top of the second floor. this continues onto the angled corner of the building and is located over the Dolphin Passage side of the building. This side of the building has five bays across all floors. The southern most of the ground floor bays has a door and there is a small window located immediately to the south of this door. All other ground floor openings are windows, these also have the same rendered surrounds that are present on the Castle Street side. The 10 first and second floor windows on the Dolphin Passage side also have flat gauged brick arches above and central keystones. The sting course above the ground floor commercial fascia is also present on this side and forms a continuous sill to the first floor windows. Several modern features are attached to façade, including a large metal flag pole, security system and its associated wiring. Overall this building is well kept, appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.
The main ground floor door is located within the angled corner of the building. it is a large and decorative original timber double door. The smaller door on the Dolphin passage side of the building is also likely original and in timber with three moulded panels. Most of the ground floor windows are large and fixed in timber frames, with a large single lower pane and three small panes in the upper half. The window at the far southern end of the building on the Dolphin passage side is a two pane timber framed sash. All of the windows across the first and second floors are modern plastic insertions.
