Full Description

Mid 20th century building, forms the western side of Market Square, single build 21-24 with inserted modern ground floor split into four commercial premises. First floor eastern façade 6 bays, with two closely spaced windows for each bay for five, the sixth is a much smaller bay with a single narrow window at the far northern end. The spaces between the two windows of each of the five bays on the first floor is filled with a slightly different (darker) coloured brick. The second floor windows align with the first floor and there is a slight brick parapet with concrete coping over these hiding a flat roof. The southern commercial ground floor of the building stretches two bays, the central two, a single bay each and the northern; two bays (including the much smaller one at the northern end). The whole build of No 25, on the northern side of No. 24 is at a different angle to this building and gives an acute angle to the interior commercial space of No. 24. The southern (side) façade has a blocked door near the south east corner. There are four equally spaced windows on the first and second floors, with a double height ground floor window aligning with the second window (from the west) on the floor above. The western (rear) façade is complex with lots of access points to various levels on different floors, there is a terrace on the roof over much of the ground floor with access via a stair leading from the south façade. The whole build is rather utilitarian in appearance, particularly on the western (rear) side of the building.

The windows and doors of the ground floor commercial eastern façade are all modern later insertions, while the first and second floor all appear to be original casement windows, four panes each and two panes on the two small northern windows. The windows on the eastern rear façade are a mix of timber frames and new pvc replacements. On the southern façade the windows are all the same as those on the eastern façade but with painted (white) timber frames.

Not seen over the 2nd floor, parts of the ground and first floor roof are used as a terrace for access to the upper floors. (1)
