Full Description
Single build 26-27 forms the NW corner of Market Square and the South West end of Cannon Street. Access to the former Market Street was on the northern side of this building. Commercial use of the ground and possibly upper floors, also likely commercial storage for the upper floors. Inserted modern ground floor for commercial use, the northern end appears to retain none of the original features while the southern has timber window surrounds and recessed timber door on the northern (left hand side) of the façade, possibly original. The whole eastern façade has a slight inward curve, and the north corner is rounded on the 1st and 2nd floor and at an angle on the ground floor. Exposed buff coloured brick on eastern and northern façade with the area between the all of the windows on the 1st and 2nd floor plastered and painted cream. The glazed commercial ground floor also covers much of the northern façade and is glazed with four large rectangular panes, the paintwork on the frames is slightly chipped, modern commercial signage above. The eastern half of the building is only a single storey though a brick parapet with concrete coping rises over the ground floor to approximately half 1st floor level. The pavement rises towards the west meaning that the base of the windows and door at the western end are at a slightly higher level. Small rectangular window on the western side of the commercial windows, with a further door and garage door at the far western end. Paintwork on both is dirty and chipped. There is a wide timber doorway between the two commercial frontages on the eastern façade on the ground floor, this gives access to the upper floors. Utilitarian features including ventilation/air conditioning system on the northern façade. There is a brick parapet with concrete coping over the 2nd floor windows.
The windows are grouped into two sets of four per floor with a single window between the two groups. The southern group of four are equally spaced, there is a larger gap between these and the single window. There is scoring in the plaster/stucco between the grouped windows and the single giving the appearance of large blocks. The single window aligns with the large timber door between the two commercial frontages at the ground floor level. This large door has a polished stone surround. The northern group of four windows stretch around the curved north eastern corner of the building, with two on the eastern façade and two on the northern. There are two large circular windows to the east of this group, one on the 1st and one on the 2nd floors. All the windows on the 1st and 2nd floors are modern PVC four pane casement windows with large rectangular lower panes and small upper panes. The circular windows also have plastic frames but do not appear to open.
Not seen but likely flat located behind a parapet, large flagpole directly over the single window at 1st and 2nd floor level and large timber door at ground floor level. (1)
