Full Description
Attractive mock Tudor style late C19th building forms the north east corner of Market Square. Former commercial use of ground floor (café) though is currently under renovation, and likely domestic use of upper floors. South façade - large glazed commercial covers the whole ground floor façade. Above this glazed frontage is the commercial sign. Some decorative original shop front details survive on either side of this sign, in timber and painted black. The south eastern corner is at an angle to the rest of the building, access to the ground floor is through a timber door within this angle. The commercial sign continues onto this corner and protrudes slightly from the angle containing the door below, giving a slight overhang above to door. First floor of the south façade is mainly filled by a large window. The walls are painted white and there is a timber effect on the façade, also painted white, which is common feature of the mock Tudor style and gives the illusion of the building being timber framed, though it is unlikely that it is. There is decorative cross detailing painted black within some of the rectangles on the façade created by this timber effect. There is a large protruding timber window header above this first floor window, painted black with 4 decorative scrolled brackets beneath, the inner of which link to the timber window mullions below. There is a slight parapet over the first floor, also painted white, but which lacks the timber effect detailing of the lower part of the first floor. At the roof level of the south façade there is a large and attractive jettied gable dormer window. The gable dormer contains the same kind of timber detailing as the rest of the façade but is here painted black. There is a break in the parapet to accommodate the overhang of this jettied dormer and there are five simple timber brackets supporting the overhang, painted black. Eastern façade – the commercial ground floor frontage also extends around this side but the floor to ceiling window only occupies the southern 1/3rd of this façade. the sign extends over this window and contains the same original shop front timber detailing. The central part of the ground floor is plastered and painted white, lacks any of the detailing apparent on the first floor. The rear/northern end is set back from the rest of the build by about a meter. There is a single large window on the ground floor with a plaster/timber string course directly above. The northern 2/3rds of the eastern façade contains a single large window with similar detailing to that present on the south façade - there is a large timber header above with two decorative scrolled brackets, painted black. The same timer effect detailing is also present on the eastern first floor façade but is not present on the rear/northern 1/3rd set back area. The parapet over the first floor continues onto this façade but stops at the point where the building is set back. Above the first floor there is a large jettied gable dormer window, similar in style to the one present on the south façade, and directly above the first floor window. There is another break in the parapet here to accommodate for the overhang, which is supported by 7 simple timber brackets. There is a single window in the rear 1/3rd of the first floor eastern façade directly above the ground floor window. A further window is situated above this at the same level as the dormer. A gutter down pipe is located to the left of these windows and is painted white.
South façade - large glazed ground floor with two large square panes in the lower part and three smaller rectangular (horizontal) panes in the upper part, none appear to open. All original timber frames which have been painted green. First floor window on the south façade is a large rectangular opening which is highly decorative. The lower part consists of 6 rectangular (vertical) panes, the outer and central two look to be casement. There are timber mullions separating the inner four from the outer two. The upper part is highly decorative and split into several panes. The central portion, aligning with the four central rectangular panes below, has a semi-circular glazing bar on the upper part with the lower part split into multiple square panes. The outer areas, aligning with the outer two rectangular panes below, also have semi-circular glazing bars. The frames and glazing bars are all timber painted green. The Jettied gable dormer above the first floor has two opening separated by a timber mullion. Each has two rectangular (vertical) panes the outer of each appears to be a casement. The frames are timber and painted green. There is a rectangular transom window above the ground floor door within the angled corner of the building. The door is modern and timber containing a large single glazed panel. The commercial window of the eastern façade has a single large rectangular pane on the lower part and two rectangular (horizontal) panes on the upper part, the left of which is used for ventilation. To the rear, within the area that is set back from the rest of the build, there is a single ground floor window with a large lower pane and small rectangular (horizontal) upper pane with timber frames painted green. The first floor window in this rear portion directly aligns with the window below, it is a timber framed sash with a single lower pane and upper part split into 12 panes with timber glazing bars, all painted green. A further window above aligns with this and is at the same level as the large dormers. This consists of two, single pane narrow sashes separated by a moulded timber mullion. the first floor window of the southern 2/3rds of the façade is a large rectangular opening, similar in style to that present on the south façade. its lower part is split into four rectangular (vertical) panes, the central two of which are casement. The upper part is again highly decorative with a semi-circular glazing bar in the upper part of it and lower part filled with multiple small square panes. The frames and glazing bars are all timber painted green. There are two openings within the large jettied gable dormer, one at each of the far ends of it with the central part containing timber detailing. Both are casement windows with painted timber frames and contain two rectangular (vertical) panes.
The lower part of the roof is mansard slate with large jettied dormers, this covers the whole of the south façade but only the southern 2/3rds of the eastern façade. Above this is a hipped slate roof with decorative ceramic original ridge tiles. (1)
