Full Description
Forms the end of a terrace on the junction between London Road and Bridge Street, on the north eastern side of London Road, with a large commercial ground floor shared with No 3 to the north west. A few original shop front details survive including three fluted timber (?) pilasters and the cornice over the commercial fascia. There are two doors at the ground floor level, one is located on the south eastern side of the façade, abutting the south eastern party wall and providing access to the upper stories, while the other is located just off centre, within a recessed porch area. Both have square windows above the transoms over the doors. The area between the two doors, including the return towards the recessed door, is glazed and there are two further windows on the north western side of the recessed door, including another in the return towards the door. The commercial fascia stretches across the whole of the ground floor and continues onto the building on the north western side. The upper stories are in an exposed red brick with dressings (on the window surrounds and at the base of each of the floors) in a lighter buff coloured brick. Some of the brickwork across the façade is weathered and worn. There are two windows per floor, aligning across the floors, each has a flat gauged brick arch above (in the buff coloured brick) and a small protruding sills. A rendered and painted parapet is located above the second floor, this is in a relatively poor condition with large cracks and areas where the paintwork is flaking away. Numerous modern features are attached to the façade at various locations including a security system and satellite dish with their associated wiring draped untidily across the façade. The south eastern (side) façade is rendered across all floors, there are a few cracks in this render and some areas of graffiti. Overall the building is in a fair condition.
The two doors at the ground floor level are both in timber and modern, the central one that provides access to the ground floor, is painted white and has two large panels, the upper of which is glazed. The other is painted black and has four rectangular panels. Both have square windows above the transoms. There are four large panes across the rest of the façade, two in the returns towards the central door and two more on either side of it. All have timber frames painted cream. The windows on the upper floors are modern plastic replacements. All are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof level was not clearly seen from the road level as it is located behind a parapet. But from the rear and side it can be seen that it is gabled and in slate with the gable end over the northern and southern party walls. (1)
