Full Description

Forms part of a late C19th/early C20th terrace on the north eastern side of London Road, with a large commercial ground floor shared with No 2 to the south east. The whole build is advanced from its north western neighbour and looks to be of a possible earlier date. A few original shop front details survive including the cornice over the commercial fascia. The main ground floor access is in the neighbouring building and the ground floor of this building is entirely glazed and divided into multiple large panes by timber frames, a small area beneath the windows is tiled with modern tiles. The commercial fascia stretches across the whole of the ground floor and continues onto the building on the south eastern side. The upper stories are in an exposed red brick with dressings (on the window surrounds and at the base of each of the floors) in a lighter buff coloured brick. Some of the brickwork across the façade is weathered and worn. There are two windows per floor, aligning across the floors, each has a flat gauged brick arch above (in the buff coloured brick) and small protruding sills. A rendered and painted parapet is located above the second floor, this is in a relatively poor condition with large cracks and areas where the paintwork is flaking away. Numerous modern features are attached to the façade at various locations including plastic gutter and waste water down pipes, a security system and satellite dish with their associated wiring draped untidily across the façade. Overall the building is in a fair -good condition and appears to be structurally sound.

The ground floor is entirely glazed and divided into four rectangular (vertical) panes of an unequal size by timber glazing bars, all have timber frames painted cream. The windows on the upper floors are modern plastic replacements. All are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof level was not clearly seen from the road level as it is located behind a parapet. But from the rear it is gabled and in slate with the gable end over the northern and southern party walls. (1)
