Full Description
Forms part of a late C19th/early C20th terrace on the north eastern side of London Road. The ground floor has a modern commercial use some of the original shop front details have been retained including: the consoles over the party walls and the protruding cornice at the top of the ground floor. There are two doors, one is located on the far north western side of the façade abutting the north western party wall and provides access to the upper floors. The other is located just off centre and gives access to the commercial ground floor. There is a small rectangular window above the transom over this door and rectangular windows on either side of it. The upper stories are in an exposed red brick with stone detailing. There is a single, large, centrally placed, canted bay window at the first floor level, the base of which rests on the protruding cornice over the ground floor. It is divided into three sections by mullions with pilaster details over the mullions, dentil detailing at the cornice level and a metallic roof over. There are three closely spaced windows at the second floor level, together they are the same width as the bay window below. These share a stone sill below and header above. There are several stone bands crossing the façade at various levels; one at both the base and the top of the window levels on both floors and three further within the gable end. The gable end has a parapet with stone coping and there is a decorative stone finial at the apex. There are brick pilasters over both the northern and southern party walls, the stone bands which cross the façade continue onto these pilasters. The bottom of the coping over the parapet ends with a decorative scroll at the top of both pilasters. There is a fair amount of staining to the brickwork and some weathering and damage to the stone details. A quantity of untidy wiring is located over the cornice above the ground floor, some of which look redundant. Overall, despite some untidiness the building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The building has two doors one is located on the far north western side of the façade abutting the north western party wall and provides access to the upper floors, this is in timber painted black. The other is located just off centre and gives access to the commercial ground floor. Both are modern. There are windows on either side of the ground floor door, and a further small rectangular window above the transom over the door. These all have timber frames painted white. There is a large canted bay window located centrally at the first floor level. This is divided into three parts by timber mullions, each of these three parts consists of an original timber framed sash. Each of these sashes is divided into multiple rectangular panes by timber glazing bars, the outer two are four panes (two wide by two high) while the central is six panes (three wide by two high). there are three second floor windows, again these are original timber frames sashes. These are all divided into four panes by timber glazing bars. All windows frames are painted white and some of this paintwork is chipped/dirty. Overall the windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof could not be clearly seen from the road level as it is located behind a parapet. It is gabled with the gable ends over the eastern and western party walls (facing the road over the main façade. A brick stack is located over the northern and southern party walls. (1)
