Full Description

Forms part of a late C19th/early C20th terrace on the north eastern side of London Road. The ground floor has a modern commercial use though it retains many of the original shop front details including: the pilasters and consoles over the party walls, the timber stall risers and door surrounds, the fascia and the cornice which runs across the whole of the top of the ground floor. There are two doors, one at either end of the façade, both have rectangular windows above the transoms. The northern provides access to the ground floor while the southern to the upper floors. There area between these two doors is glazed. The upper stories are in an exposed red brick with stone detailing. There is a single, large, centrally placed, bowed window at the first floor level, the base of which rests on the protruding cornice over the ground floor. There is dentil detailing at the cornice level of this window and a flat metallic roof over. There are three windows at the second floor level, the central is larger than the outer two and has a decorative cornice above supported by scrolled brackets. A stone string course runs along the lower part of the second floor and forms a continuous sill to all of the second floor windows, alongside this there is also an area of raised brickwork beneath each of these widows. There is a stone band at the top of the second floor level aligning with the tops of the second floor windows, this has been carves to form an ogee arch above both of the outer windows. A pediment rises above the second floor in brick with stone coping and an elaborate triangular pediment is located at its apex with a date stone (1903). Two brick pilasters run from the base of this pediment at the apex on either side of the central second floor window and finish just below the string course at the base of the second floor. Brick pilasters are also located over both of the party walls, these finish at the base of the coping over the pediment, at the top of the second floor, with pointed stone finials. All of the stone detailing located across the façade is painted white, some of it is quite badly weathered and worn. Several modern features are attached to the façade at various locations, including two modern vents. An amount of untidy wiring is also attached to the façade, likely associated with an (unseen) aerial or security system. Overall, despite some weathering to the architectural details, the building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.

The building has two doors one at each end of the façade. Both are modern and in timber painted blue to match the commercial signage and both of these doors have windows above the transoms. The frames to the doors and windows over are in timber painted white. There is a single large window between these two doors, this is a later plastic insertion and is divided into four large panes, the horizontal divide aligns with the transoms over the doors. There is a single large bowed window at the first floor level and three smaller windows at the second floor level. All are later plastic insertions and in a good condition.

The roof is gabled and in slate with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. It was not clearly seen as it is located behind a large pediment with a parapet. There are decorative ceramic tiles of the ridge. A painted brick stack is located over the south eastern party wall. (1)
